That's a Wrap!

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! It's hard to believe, but this is the last parent blog for the calendar year. 2015 has been a busy, productive, and fun year! Our entire staff read the book "Teach Like a Pirate" to help us make learning fun for all. Our students have worked on our Three to Be themes and are now starting to delve into our 7 Habits. Our PTA has already held some fun events for our Rosedale community and they have plenty more in store after the new year. Each year the moments seem to go by more quickly than the last, so be sure to enjoy those moments as you reflect on 2015 and I'm excited for the great things to come in 2016!

MEET THE ROSEDALE STAFF
Jamey Masters - Art Teacher
Hello, I am Jamey Masters, Art teacher at Rosedale Elementary. I have been teaching Art for 18 years; all in Livonia and all at the K-4 level. I earned my Drawing degree and Art Education degree from the University of Toledo. And I earned my Elementary Education endorsement and a Masters in Educational Leadership from Eastern Michigan University. After growing up in Toledo, I moved to Michigan with my wife the same time I started teaching. We have a daughter who is a junior at Stevenson and a son who is in sixth grade at Riley. When I am not in school I am usually at the ice rink coaching my son’s hockey team. I have coached hockey for over 12 years. And in my down time I love listening to music and watching movies; especially all the old Godzilla movies!

One of my goals this year, besides meeting all the students, is to create excitement and confidence within the students at Rosedale when they come into the Art room. Many young artists get frustrated when they are unable to draw exactly what they see in their “head”. I want to demonstrate to them how to break their drawings down into manageable parts. This will also help them in the rest of their different types of artworks.

Five words that describe my classroom: inviting, creative, challenging, developing, and fun!!

PTA POINTS
  • Next PTA meeting will be Thursday, January 7 at 6:30 pm

Did you know that the results for the M-Step are soon to be released?  We should receive them shortly and plan on sending them home when we return from break. As a reminder, M-Step is the state testing for students grades 3-11 that replaced the MEAP. Because this is a first time test, the data will NOT be used for school rankings and the test will be modified (and shortened) for the next round in the spring. Great things are happening at Rosedale!

Lifelong Learners

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! One of our main goals at Rosedale is to create a culture that promotes lifelong learning. We don't just want to teach our students facts, but to develop a love of learning, engage their curiosity and spark their imaginations to dream and create something new. One of the ways we help develop this culture is to model for our students that we are never done learning. Our teachers attend professional development sessions throughout their careers and I remain active in professional learning organizations as well. One group that I serve with is MEMSPA (Michigan Elementary and Middle Schools Principal Association). I recently attended the state conference where I had the opportunity to connect with principals from around the state, share the great things we are doing in Livonia, and most importantly learn new ideas from international speakers, authors, and outstanding principals from around the state. I was inspired by my new learning and hope to pass that inspiration for learning to our staff and students. Great things are happening at Rosedale!

Ruth Martin - Music Teacher

Hello, I am Ruth Martin the music teacher at Rosedale. I have had a long teaching career that started in Grand Rapids,Michigan then continued on to Tehran,Iran; Sao Paulo , Brazil and Livonia,Michigan.  Definitely I have sand in my shoes. Most of my teaching experiences has been K-6 with a few years of 7-12.  I earned my Bachelor's of Music Education at Olivet College,Kankakee, Illinois. My interests in teaching children music has led me to study Orff-Schulwerk and Education Through Music. " Education Through Music is the study of artful teaching and the process of learning through song and play.  ETM activities build the imaging system and symbolization process through the synergy of language, song, movement, and interactive play;  thereby, laying the foundation for the building of intelligence."

I grew up on a farm in Northern Ohio and have always been interested in travel.  My adopted son,Jason (16) and I live in Ypsilanti. We enjoy going to Education Through Music classes ,cooking together and travel.

One of my goals is to develop a  deeper understanding of language through song lyrics .  When possible, I work with Occupational Therapists to help children integrate the different sensory systems that facilitate focus and learning.  Five words for describing my classroom are: inclusive, fun, active, joyful and engaging.

This allows them to share ideas with grade level partners and plan lessons together. We also meet weekly before school to share ideas, learn information, and have training sessions on new topics. Our staff continues to learn and grow from each other. Great things are happening at Rosedale!

Winter Wonderland

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! Like many of you, I grow weary of the snow at the end of winter. But from the first snowfall through Christmas, it really is beautiful to see. One of the great things about living in Michigan is the chance to experience all four seasons in their glory. Please remember that as long as the temperature permits, we go outside everyday for recess. Students need to be dressed appropriately with boots, hats, gloves and coats. We want to make sure our students can enjoy their time outside even during the winter months. Thanks for all your help!

First snowfall of the season

MEET THE ROSEDALE STAFF
Sandy Jouppi - Speech Therapist
My name is Sandy Jouppi and I am the speech therapist at Rosedale.  I have worked at Rosedale for a long time and every year I beg the speech department heads to NOT switch me to another school.  Many speech therapists have their assignments changed each year and I feel so fortunate that they have always granted my request and I get to stay at my favorite school.

I am married with two children and live in Canton.  My daughter is 11 years old and in 6th grade.  My son is in 9th grade and  plays football for the Canton Chiefs.  I love watching Luke and Shelby play the sports that they love because I know it goes by so quickly and then they are grown up.  I have also started playing soccer myself and while it certainly doesn't look pretty, it is a lot of fun. We also like to travel as a family and have visited many states in our travel trailer.  Camping and hiking is our favorite thing to do. I also love dogs and volunteer for Waggin Tails.  If you are ever looking for a dog, let me know and I will find you one...or two:)

PTA POINTS
  • Please see the attached flyer for the Five Below Fundraiser
  • Please keep collecting box tops and Campbell's soup labels for spring collection

Did you know there is a difference between a snowstorm and a blizzard? A blizzard occurs when you can’t see for 1/4 mile, the winds are always 35 miles an hour or more, and the storm must last at least 3 hours to be classed as a blizzard. If any of these conditions are less, it is only a snowstorm. Let's hope we don't see any blizzards this season! Great things are happening at Rosedale!

Giving Thanks!

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! This week, families across the country will be giving thanks for all the blessings in their lives. I'd like to take this opportunity to give thanks for the incredible staff at Rosedale. It's such a pleasure to work in an environment where everyone is unified for a common goal...helping each child succeed! It's a place where ideas are shared, risks are taken to try new things, and people strive to make learning fun. At Rosedale, we work toward making students feel safe, valued, and excited about learning. And along the way, it becomes a fun place for adults too! This year, I'm thankful for many things, but the wonderful staff at Rosedale is right at the top of my list! Great things are happening at Rosedale!

MEET THE ROSEDALE STAFF
Erin Krause - School Psychologist

Hello! My name is Erin Krause. I am thrilled to be a new member of the Rosedale Team, as the School Psychologist!  Not only am I new to Rosedale, but this is also my first year with Livonia Public Schools.  I also service Churchill High School and the Jackson Center Early Childhood Program.  Before joining LPS, I served as a school psychologist with the Detroit Public Schools for fifteen years.  I graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Psychology (Go Green!), and I have a Master’s degree in School and Community Psychology from Wayne State University. I live in Royal Oak with my husband, our four-year old daughter, Makayla, and our five-year old “puppy,” Stoli.  I love spending as much time as possible with my family, going to the park, taking walks, and playing games.  I also enjoy cooking, reading, traveling, and cheering on my Spartans!

One of my goals for the school year is to get to know each teacher on staff at Rosedale, so that I can become more familiar with their classes, routines, and teaching styles.  I hope to be a valuable resource for our teachers this year and the years to come!  I am assigned to Rosedale one day per week, so I share a room with our Title One paraprofessionals.  With their help, our room has become welcoming, friendly, caring, colorful, and inspiring!

  • We popped 186 bags of popcorn for students who brought in cans for Goodfellows!

Did you know the Oxford Dictionary has just declared the "word of the year" for 2015?  For the first time in history, it's not a word at all, but an emoji.  The winner is the "laugh till you cry" emoji.
While I don't expect this will become a part of our language arts curriculum, I thought it was a fun fact to share:)  Great things are happening at Rosedale!

Youth CAN Make a Difference!

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! For the past couple of years, our students have been taking on various service projects to help others. These projects help both our students and our community. From penny drives for cancer research, to Jump Rope for Heart, to helping veterans, our students have learned that even the youngest members of the community can make a difference.  Our most recent service projects at Rosedale have been the Goodfellow's canned food drive and the Blessings in a Backpack program. Both help our students and lend a helping hand to others. As a Rotarian involved in local and global service projects and as a principal, I am so proud of our students and staff for their dedicated efforts to help others. We are showing one service project at a time that Youth CAN Make a Difference!
 Blessings in a Backpack helpers!

Elections

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! This week we had our local election day and it got me thinking about what a great system of government we have. How fortunate we are to have a system that allows all adult citizens a chance to have a voice in our local, state, and national government. However, the key is exercising that right to vote and making the effort to have our voices heard. I was happy to see so many people in the school throughout the day, exercising their right to vote and shape our future. It's a great example to set for our children to show that we are involved, informed, and most importantly take action by casting our votes. It won't be too long before they will be following our example and voting themselves and shaping their future!

Meghan Hernandez - Title I Paraprofessional
Hello Rosedale Community! My name is Meghan Hernandez and I'm so excited to be back at Rosedale for a second year as a Title 1 Reading Interventionist and also to be running Rosedale's Math Club again. I grew up in Livonia and attended Livonia Schools, so I really love and care about the community. I graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Elementary Education. In my spare time, I love spending time with my husband Jeff and our sweet pup Moslee, who we absolutely adore. I also enjoy decorating our home, cooking and gardening.

My goal for this year is to enhance and build upon my lessons through technology by incorporating apps on my IPad that help students build their decoding skills. As an extra and fun challenge before students leave my room I have been giving them a challenging "Exit" word, that they need to use their decoding skills to figure out. They have been loving this!

The five words I choose to describe my classroom are: safe, fun, encouraging, supportive and triumphant!

PTA POINTS
  • We made over $250 on our Election Day bake sale :)
  • Have you signed up for conferences?! Make sure you do so you don't miss out on our newest PTA membership campaign called FALL in love with PTA!
  • Watch for Rosedale Elementary Spirit Wear sales during PTA conferences and order forms coming home soon. This year will feature Rosedale's 3 to BE pledge!

Did you know that using the blog format for updates allows me to track how many people read the posts and what type of device they use to read it?  The average weekly posts gets over 350 views and those views are broken down by 68% phones, 6% iPads, 23% desktop computer, and the rest on various mobile devices. It's amazing how technology allows us to communicate more effectively and efficiently.  Great things are happening at Rosedale!

Traditions

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! This week, we celebrated one of our school traditions of Trunk or Treat.  It's a fun event that brings in the whole family and helps us make some home-school connections.  It also reminds me of the many other traditions that families may have at this time of the year.  Traditions may include going to the cider mill, doing a hay ride, carving pumpkins, or visiting a corn maze.  The great thing about traditions is that it builds continuity and structure for our students.  More importantly, traditions often create fond memories that can last a lifetime.  I hope you and your family had a chance to join us for our Trunk or Treat event and also enjoy some traditions of your own.
A frightfully good time at Trunk or Treat!

Alena Zabawski - Title I Paraprofessional

Hello! My name is Alena Zabawski!  I graduated from the University of Michigan-Dearborn with the certification to be elementary teacher in 2014.  I am excited to be at Rosedale for my second year in Livonia Public Schools!  I am a Title 1 Parpro, where I provide extra reading support to first, second, and third graders.  In addition, I help conduct the math club in the morning for third and fourth graders.  Outside of school, I enjoy camping and spending time with my boyfriend, who is also a teacher in Livonia Public Schools.  I also enjoy being involved with my Polish heritage by creating Polish crafts, like a szopka, and being a Polish folk dancer.

The goal for this year is to make my time with the students to be interacting and engaging.  I want these students to feel confident by practicing their decoding strategies while reading or talking about word study.  I am using the ipad during word study and having students leave with an “exit” word.

The five words to describe my classroom are: safe, encouraging, triumphant, supportive, and enjoyable!

PTA POINTS

Did you know Livonia Public Schools has a common climate goal for all schools? Our goal is that "All students will experience a positive, safe, and welcoming environment, where both students and adults respect and value one another." That's a pretty awesome goal to have both in school and out of school.  Our staff along with many other schools are in the process of implementing this goal and making it a reality every day for our students. Great things are happening at Rosedale!

A Haircut

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here!  This week, I got a haircut. Hardly big news...or so I thought until I walked into the kindergarten and first grade classrooms.  Students suddenly stopped their lessons and began to point in shocked amazement.  "You got a haircut!" they shouted.  I couldn't deny it, they were right:)  I soon began to realize how observant our students were and how closely they watched me.  Then I began to think about what an awesome responsibility that is.  If they watched my hair growth that closely, certainly they must watch my behavior and tone. With all those eyes on me, am I being the role model at all times that they need?  Am I living the Three to Be and the 7 Habits that I try to instill in them?  I think so, but it was a good reminder that students (and all children) do as we do and not as we say. It made me think that I need to be, at all times, what I expect our students to be and to be an inspiration for them and someone they can look up to. As parents, your children look to you first to see what kind of adults they want to grow up to be. Let's all remember that students notice much more than just our haircuts...they notice everything.

2nd Grade will be conducting another Goodfellow's Canned Food Drive for Youth Making a Difference!

What are you Reading?

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! One of our goals this year is to promote literacy (specifically reading for pleasure) with all of our students. In addition to the many ways teachers are encouraging reading in their classrooms, I've started something new with our morning announcements. Each morning, our student announcers share out what book they are currently reading (or have just finished reading).  It's a great way to start conversations about reading for pleasure. We are also looking into having students write book reviews to help generate interest for other students looking for engaging books. The research shows that the more students read the more they achieve. So, don't forget to ask your child at home, "What are you reading?" At Rosedale we are working toward igniting that love of reading and hoping that will last a lifetime!

Congratulations to Elizabeth, our student Principal for the Day!

MEET THE ROSEDALE STAFF

Mrs. Collins-Robison - Elementary Support Teacher
Hello Rosedale community. My name is Denise Collins-Robison (Mrs. Robison around school) and I’m the EST (Elementary Support Teacher) here. This is my 9th year at Rosedale and I still love it! I can’t imagine another school or role in which I’d rather serve. I truly believe that we have a very unique and special TEAM here with our skilled, dedicated, caring staff; diverse and eager students; and supportive, involved PTA and families.

I’m a Social Worker by education, experience and heart, graduating from Michigan State (Go Spartans!) with Bachelors’ in SW and Psychology, and Masters’ in Clinical and School SW. Prior to joining Rosedale, I worked for 25+ years in Mental Health and Substance Abuse settings with children and families, taught at Wayne State and Schoolcraft College, and lead Prevention and Parenting education programs in Livonia and W/W schools. This varied SW and education experience has been a great help to me in my EST dual role, as I provide both behavioral, social and emotional support to our students and their families, as well as academic interventions to our eager Kindergarten learners. It’s always so interesting! I also lead and am dedicated to our Rosedale PBS / Positive Behavior Support program, which for the past 2 years has merged our 3 BE’s with the 7 Habits concepts.

I’m a Livonia native, LPS graduate, and my husband Dave and I live in Livonia too. Our 2 young adult sons, Jacob (soon to graduate EMU) and Colton (2nd year at Schoolcraft) are Churchill graduates, so I feel a special pride and commitment to our LPS community. In my spare time, I enjoy getting outside to walk, bike ride and garden; staying in to read and do crafts; spending time with family and friends, and vacationing up north.

Although I’m more a people person than “techie”, one of my goals this year is to find ways to merge our great new Bond enhanced technology with our PBS / 7 Habits program.  The 5 words I chose to describe my EST role this year are: Caring, Supportive, Fun, Safe and Inspiring.

PTA POINTS
  • Box Tops and Campbell Soup labels fall deadline is October 23.

Did you know that our teachers are working on Content Integration? They are taking subject matter like reading, writing, and science and blending them together during lessons.  A science project may include reading for a research project and then writing to show how the experiment was carried out. It's a way of teaching all our subjects in a way that is meaningful and connected to real-world experiences for all our students. Great things are happening at Rosedale!

Say Cheese!

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! It's that time of year again...Picture time!  On Monday, our Rosedale students will get dressed up, fix their hair, and show off those fabulous smiles. Picture day is a special occasion at the school, because it captures a moment in time that parents can treasure for years to come. As a parent, I love to look back on my daughters' pictures and see how they have grown and matured through the years. It's also fun to see the memories that are captured in the yearbook as well. The older I get, the quicker the school years seem to go by. Picture day is a chance to freeze that moment in time and capture a memory of each school year. I hope your child has a fun picture day and that every day is a chance to make happy memories at school!

Congratulations for our Students of the Month for the theme of RESPECT!

My name is Rachel Robertson and this is my second year teaching at Rosedale. Last year I was a kindergarten teacher at Rosedale and I am lucky enough to have moved up to be a First Grade teacher now!  I started teaching almost 20 years ago where I taught in Dearborn Heights. I have also worked as a Title I reading Interventionist in Livonia. I absolutely love teaching younger students and watching them grow! I have an Early Childhood degree and Master's Degree in education from U of M- Dearborn. It is a joy to be in the classroom and I think I learn as much from my kiddos as they learn from me!

I live in Livonia with my 2 children and our dog Coda Bear. Jake is a 9th grader and Grace is a 5th grader. Both of my children attended Rosedale so I have been a part of the Rosedale family for many years! We love to travel around Michigan and visit family all over the United States. We are a sports-loving family so we spend much of our time watching and playing football, baseball, soccer, and volleyball. In our free time we love bike riding, bonfires and family time. I am a very lucky Mom!

This year, each of our staff came up with "Five Words" to describe goals in our classrooms. I will spend my year working toward having a silly, fun, cool, safe and awesome classroom! I think we are doing a great job so far :-)

Did you know that Lifetouch Picture company gives a lot back to our school?  In addition to providing quality photographs pictures and yearbooks for our students, they give our school a full range of complimentary items. They provide the birthday cards that are given out daily, the student of the month certificates, our visitor badges and stickers, and even posters for our hallways to help us display our 7 Habits! It sure is a great partnership and helps our Rosedale students. Great things are happening at Rosedale!

10,000

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! This week, the parent blog passed 10,000 views.  That means, during the past 9 months we've had over 1,000 views per month!  That's exciting to me, because it means that our Rosedale community is really using this communication tool and staying informed about the many great things happening in our building. My goal when creating the blog was to communicate in a more dynamic way to families, share out important events, and utilize both video and photos of activities.  Each week also showcases one of our outstanding staff members and will now also include "PTA Points" to show the great activites our PTA members are coordinating. I hope you are enjoying the parent blog and I will continue to strive to make it interesting and relevant for all our Rosedale families.

MEET THE ROSEDALE STAFF

Mrs. Berrelez - 4th Grade Teacher
My family at Lollapalooza in Chicago, waiting to see Paul McCartney.

My name is Sue Berrelez and I’m currently teaching 4th grade here at Rosedale.  I have been at Rosedale/Johnson my entire teaching career.  I have taught grades 1,2,3,4,and 6.  I have a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Elementary Education and a Masters in Reading from Eastern Michigan University. Some of you know that I grew up in this area and attended Nankin Mills Elementary School and graduated from Churchill High School.  I am married to my wonderful husband Bob and we have a daughter Sara (15), who is in the 10th grade.  We also have a dog named Casey who just turned 11, but he still makes us laugh everyday with the funny, quirky things he likes to do.  I enjoy spending time with my family.  I also love gardening and reading books.  This summer we went to Chicago to see Paul McCartney, we are big Beatles Fans!

One of my goals this year is to challenge my students (as well as myself) to read 40 books of various genres by the end of the school year.  I also want to learn how to incorporate the new interative whiteboard into my classroom lessons.

Five words that I chose to describe my classroom are:  Helpful/Supportive, Inviting, Challenging, Informative, Encouraging, Collaborative  (I had to be different, I needed 6 ! )

PTA POINTS
  • The PTA would like to give a big THANK YOU to Verizon for donating snacks and drinks and providing volunteers for our Walk-a-Thon
  • We would also like to thank all of our Rosedale volunteers who helped make this event possible!!
  • Finally, thank you to all who donated to our school fundraiser!  Money will be counted this weekend and awards will be given out Monday afternoon following our Student of the Month Assembly

Did you know that all Rosedale students will be taking a math and reading diagnostic on the computer?  The iReady diagnostic will be administered three times a year to show students' areas of strength and struggles.  While the diagnostic will not be used for grading purposes, they will be used to show student growth and help guide instruction.  Please check out the parent letter that was sent out in the email.  Great things are happening at Rosedale!

A Good Walk

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! Each night, I try to take a walk around the neighborhood to get a little exercise and also to reflect on the day.  Sometimes when things get stressful, it's nice to just take a good walk to clear the head.  Next Friday is a chance for ALL of our Rosedale students to take a good walk as they participate in our Rockin' USA Walk-a-thon.  This walk will have far more benefits than a little exercise.  It's a chance to raise money for our school, build fellowship, and a way for everyone to do their part to make Rosedale a better place!  The money raised will help with field trip transportation, assemblies, school-wide initiatives and just about every fun activity we do with students!  It's a fun and easy way to participate and support our PTA and our students.  Please remember to send your pledge and money by Friday, October 2 and thank you for your continued support!

MEET THE ROSEDALE STAFF

Mrs. Boggs - Third Grade Teacher

My name is Susan Boggs and I have been teaching at Rosedale/Johnson School since 1988.  I have taught 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade.  I received my bachelor's and master's degree from Eastern Michigan University. I have one daughter, Emilie and one 5 year old granddaughter Rylie.  I enjoy spending time with my family taking walks, nature, traveling and going to festivals.  This summer I met my 2 sisters in California for a "sistercation".  We went to Disneyland, Sea World, took a bus tour to Mexico and pampered ourselves at a spa.

One of my goals I have this year is to use the interactive white board in the classroom and to have the children explore more with the iPads we acquired last year.

I  hope that my class would describe my classroom as fun, safe, informative, exciting and motivating!

RESPECT VIDEO (3 MINUTES)
As we focus on the theme of Respect, this is a great video that shows what happens when we treat others the way we want to be treated.

Did you know that the Livonia Kiwanis Club donates dictionaries each year for our third grade students?  They recently brought to our school one dictionary for each child to keep and take home.  It certainly is a kind gesture and our students love having a dictionary of their own. We would like to give a big THANK YOU to the Kiwanis Club. Great things are happening at Rosedale!
