A Good Walk

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! Each night, I try to take a walk around the neighborhood to get a little exercise and also to reflect on the day.  Sometimes when things get stressful, it's nice to just take a good walk to clear the head.  Next Friday is a chance for ALL of our Rosedale students to take a good walk as they participate in our Rockin' USA Walk-a-thon.  This walk will have far more benefits than a little exercise.  It's a chance to raise money for our school, build fellowship, and a way for everyone to do their part to make Rosedale a better place!  The money raised will help with field trip transportation, assemblies, school-wide initiatives and just about every fun activity we do with students!  It's a fun and easy way to participate and support our PTA and our students.  Please remember to send your pledge and money by Friday, October 2 and thank you for your continued support!

MEET THE ROSEDALE STAFF

Mrs. Boggs - Third Grade Teacher

My name is Susan Boggs and I have been teaching at Rosedale/Johnson School since 1988.  I have taught 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade.  I received my bachelor's and master's degree from Eastern Michigan University. I have one daughter, Emilie and one 5 year old granddaughter Rylie.  I enjoy spending time with my family taking walks, nature, traveling and going to festivals.  This summer I met my 2 sisters in California for a "sistercation".  We went to Disneyland, Sea World, took a bus tour to Mexico and pampered ourselves at a spa.

One of my goals I have this year is to use the interactive white board in the classroom and to have the children explore more with the iPads we acquired last year.

I  hope that my class would describe my classroom as fun, safe, informative, exciting and motivating!

RESPECT VIDEO (3 MINUTES)
As we focus on the theme of Respect, this is a great video that shows what happens when we treat others the way we want to be treated.

Did you know that the Livonia Kiwanis Club donates dictionaries each year for our third grade students?  They recently brought to our school one dictionary for each child to keep and take home.  It certainly is a kind gesture and our students love having a dictionary of their own. We would like to give a big THANK YOU to the Kiwanis Club. Great things are happening at Rosedale!

Partnerships

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! As I enter my 20th year in the schools, I have found one thing to be certain...Education is about partnerships! Partnerships between students and teachers, partnerships between administration and teachers, partnerships between parents and staff, and partnerships between the school and the community.  One of the most important partnerships at our school is embodied in the PTA.  The group that brings parents, teachers, and community members together each month to coordinate activities and raise funds for much needed programs and supplies.  Our goal this year is to bring as many people as possible into this wonderful partnership and remember that many hands make light work! If you are interested in joining the PTA, please contact our membership chair Cara Williams by calling or texting 734.644.5569 or email at cara_23_@hotmail.com. When we have effective partnerships like the PTA, great things happen for our students!
For every membership your family brings in, your name will be displayed on a topping as we fill our pizzas!!

ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL PROCEDURES

Parents, please be sure to have your child to the school by 8:45 am as our first bell rings at 8:49.  If you are walking your child up to the school, please be sure to park in a designated spot and use the crosswalk.  Safety is our primary concern!

Also, at dismissal, please do not pick up your child early unless it is an emergency or for a medical appointment.  It can be very disruptive to classrooms (and the student) when they have to leave early and it takes time away from instruction.  Thank you for your cooperation and partnership!

Mrs. Benson - 2nd Grade Teacher

Cheers! For those of you who don't know me, my name is Sandi Benson and I am currently a 2nd grade teacher here at Rosedale.  I have been fortunate enough to be with the Rosedale community for twenty years and have taught both first and second grade during that time period. I have a bachelor's degree in Social Science and a master's degree in Educational Leadership, both of which I am proud to say that I earned from Madonna University.

Many people don't realize that my husband and I have both been lifelong Livonia residents. We are committed to this district and both feel proud to be part of the community. Livonia really is a great place to live! My husband and I have been married for 17 years. We have three wonderful daughters who keep us really busy. Christianna is our oldest daughter. She is a 9th grader and is involved in cross country, student council, and loves to sing whenever she gets the chance. Kailyn is a sixth grader and our youngest daughter Katarina is a third grader. Both of our younger girls are on competitive dance teams. As for myself, I love to read, go camping, spend time with my family, and travel whenever I get the chance.

One of my goals this year is to use Twitter to enhance my classroom teaching. I recently started my Twitter account this past summer and I have already been connecting with inspiring teachers from all over. Furthermore, I plan  to incorporate some of those amazing ideas that I am learning about into my own classroom.

My hope is that my students would use some of the following words when trying to describe my classroom:fun, inspiring, welcoming, respectful, and filled with lots of technology.

Did you know that all Livonia teachers get a minimum of 30 hours of professional development from the district each year?  In addition to that, many teachers take college courses, attend summer and weekend conferences and do professional reading throughout the year.  Our teachers model continuous learning for our students.  Great things are happening at Rosedale!

Five Words

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here!  Last week I mentioned that each of our staff members submitted five words that they would like students to use when describing their classrooms.  Each week a featured staff member will share out their five words in the update, just as I did last week.  It was posted on our Rosedale Facebook page, but I wanted to share again the Word Cloud that was created using our classroom descriptors.  The more often a word was mentioned by a teacher, the larger the word appears.  You can see from our word cloud that Rosedale teachers want learning to be FUN for our students.  Words like safe, welcoming, and excellence also appear frequently.  What a great atmosphere for our Rosedale students!  It's going to be a great school year.

MEET THE ROSEDALE STAFF

Mrs. Weakley - Kindergarten Teacher

My name is Tracy Weakley. I am very proud to be one of the kindergarten teachers here at Rosedale! I grew up in Livonia and went to Nankin Mills elementary, Emerson middle school and Franklin High school. I always knew I wanted to be a teacher and was lucky enough to begin my career in Livonia at the age of 16 working in the before and after school child care program (SACC). While working in SACC, I earned my degree from Eastern Michigan University in Elementary education with an early childhood endorsement. I also have a master’s degree from Madonna University in special education. This is my 10th year of teaching. Before becoming a kindergarten teacher I was a pre K teacher in the Great Start Readiness program. I also taught preschoolers with special needs for many years. I am happily married to my husband Ryan of 8 years and have 3 beautiful children. Ava who is 4, Kellen who is 3, and Wyatt who is 10 months old. In my spare time I enjoy spending time with family, doing crafts and cooking. I always love trying new recipes!

One of my goals this year is to collaborate more regularly with preschool programs to help both parents and staff members prepare their children for the transition into kindergarten. This is a very big milestone for both children and families. I would love to help facilitate a smooth transition by sharing materials and providing helpful information for teachers and families. I’m looking forward to working with and learning from our new preschool staff at Rosedale this year!

The 5 words that I choose to describe my classroom environment are: Fun, nurturing, inspiring, safe and memorable!

Did you know that all Rosedale students will be using a new reading and math diagnostic this year called iReady.  This program allows students to do short computer assessments three times a year to help teachers find their strengths and weaknesses.  We piloted the program last year with small groups and the students loved it!  These tools help us give the "just right" instruction to each child.  Great things are happening at Rosedale!

A Rising Tide

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! I hope all our Rosedale families had a great summer and are ready for the new school year.  I know I am! Each year before school starts, our teachers spend a week getting ready for our students by participating in professional development.  Some of it involves curriculum, some technology, and some of it is what we want to focus on as a staff.  This year, our building focus was bringing passion and excitement into our classroom lessons and we prepared for that by reading the book "Teach Like a Pirate!".  We are channeling the pirate traits of being fearless, enterprising, and will bring a sense of adventure to everything we do.   The Rosedale staff will be following the motto of "A rising tide lifts all boats!" as we all try to lift each other to excellence.  We will bring the spirit of excitement and new learning to each child and while you probably won't see parrots, treasure chests, or pirate costumes in the school...you just might see a pirate eye patch from time to time:)

MEET THE ROSEDALE STAFF

Jonathon Wennstrom - Principal

Hi folks! This year marks my 20th year in education and I couldn't be more excited. I feel so at home with the Rosedale community and this staff is truly inspiring to work with. With high standards in curriculum, more tools for technology, and increased involvement from families, this is an incredible time to be an educator.  I feel like I learn from my colleagues and students constantly and each day is a new adventure!

One of my goals this year is to be more involved with educational policy at the state level.  I've joined a group called Michigan Educators' Voice Fellowship and will advocate for high standards as well as giving students, staff, and parents a voice in the policies that impact our schools.

I've asked each staff member to submit five words that they would like to describe their classroom environments this year.  Each week you will hear from a new staff member and see their five words.  My words this year are: Fun, Inspiring, Caring, Excellence, and Creative!

Did you know that Rosedale now has two preschool classrooms?  We have four half-day sections of the Great Start Readiness Program or GSRP.  We are so excited to have this program at our school and the staff have been a great addition to our Rosedale group!  Great things are happening at Rosedale!
