A Galaxy Far, Far Away

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! This week, Rosedale students had a very special visitor from a galaxy far, far away. If you are familiar with Star Wars, you would have recognized the familiar outfit of a storm trooper at our Youth Making a Difference assembly. At the assembly, one of our Rosedale parents, Eric Alexander, shared how he turned his passion for Star Wars and costume making into something that helps children and our community. Eric and his group, the 501st Legion, donate their time and talents to such charities as Make a Wish Foundation and visit our local Children's Hospital to brighten the lives of children. What a great example for our own Rosedale students. How are you using your time and talents to help others?

I have 2 sons (Walt and David)  2 daughters(Sarah and Laura),1 wonderful son-in-law(Eric), and 2 grand-babies(Olivia and Alana)! They are all grown with successful careers, and some are scattered about the country...thankfully the babies are next door!! When I'm not at school my husband and I love to spend time with the babies, get together with friends, watch old movies and read. My husband I love to travel, so we do that quite a bit. We have family in Oregon and California, and we try to make yearly trips there.

My professional goals this year have included trying learn the "new" ropes in second grade .... they've changed since I last taught it 10 years ago! I am also incorporating more accelerated reader into my classroom. Finally, this second semester will be the added use of more tablet time in the classroom.

Five words I would use to describe my classroom are: Fun, Giving, Busy, Journalistic, Exciting.

Data Driven

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! One of the things we strive for at Rosedale is to base our decisions on data. That means we look at all available information when we determine who needs extra intervention, what that intervention will be, and if the intervention is working. To help us look at all three of these areas, we have scheduled "Data Dives" where we get our Achievement Team together and meet with every teacher on every child. This is an all day process that happens several times a year, but it really helps us improve learning for all students. Teachers often have good instincts about how best to help a student learn, but it's important to match our instincts with what the data tells us as well. I'm proud of the dedication our teachers show in finding ways to help students. Together, we are helping all students succeed!

3rd Grade students get a guitar demonstration as we discuss the science of sound waves!

Practice what we Preach

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! As we prepare to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, I was thinking of the fact that one of his most revered characteristics is that he practiced what he preached. He didn't just advocate for change, he made it happen. He didn't just talk about peace, he lived it. He didn't just have a dream, he helped mold it into reality. We look up to people who practice what they preach, because all too often it is rare for people to do so. I hope Rosedale will always be remembered by students and parents as a place where people practiced what they preached and lived out our beliefs that all students can learn and achieve their full potential!

Kindergarten students hear a story about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

MEET THE ROSEDALE STAFF
Jeanne Fuller - Kindergarten Teacher

My name is Jeanne Fuller and I have taught Kindergarten at Rosedale School for the past 5 years.  I am so happy to be a part of the Rosedale family and absolutely LOVE teaching Kindergarten!  This is my 20th year teaching.  I was a substitute teacher, a Title 1 Learning Interventionist, and a Kindergarten teacher in 2 other Livonia schools before I came to Rosedale,   I did both my undergraduate and graduate studies at Central Michigan University. I have been married to my wonderful husband, Scott for 33 years and have 3 beautiful children – Anthony, 32, who is married with 3 children and lives and works in Avon, Ohio; Melissa, 29 who travels around the U.S. implementing and monitoring a computer program at different regional offices for the company she works for: and Rachael, 24 who is attending Wayne State University Pharmacy School, works, and lives at home.  When I am not teaching, I enjoy spending weekends up north at our chalet or part of my summer at our family home in northern Minnesota.  I love sports, especially ice hockey and am a huge Boston Bruins fan.  I also love to cook, travel, spend time with my family, and visit with my grandchildren as much as I can.

My goal this year is to work with my students to foster their independence and help them learn that it is OK to make mistakes as long as they learn from them.  Everything is a BIG problem to a 5 year old, so I want them to learn to take a deep breath, know it's not the end of the world, and work on figuring out a solution to their problem.

The 5 words that best describe my classroom are fun, safe, happy, exciting, and problem solving.

PTA POINTS
  • Next meeting will be Thursday, February 4 at 6:30 pm in the Library
  • A PTA Calendar of Events will be coming home soon!

They are mentioned during the morning announcements and get to come down to pick up the card and pencil. Those celebrating birthdays on weekends are recognized on Friday and those during the break either right before we leave or when we return. Birthdays are a BIG event for our students and we try to make it special. Great things are happening at Rosedale!

Keeping it positive!

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! One of my goals for 2016 is to share positive messages as often as I can. One way that I plan on doing that is by making a positive phone call every day.  I've asked the teachers to help me by sending me names of students when they do something positive, make improvements, or give extra effort. So, if you get a phone call from the office, don't panic! It just might be one of my positive phone calls:) How are you keeping things positive in your life?

Congratulations to our Students of the Month! "Be Proactive"

Happy 2016!

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! It's hard to believe, but 2016 is here! One of the great things about working in a school is that we get to have two fresh starts each year. The traditional fresh start at the beginning of each academic year and also the fresh start of a new calendar year with all its resolutions and plans for improvement. I think it's a wonderful opportunity for students and staff to try something new, give increased effort, and refocus on what they wish to accomplish this year. Like last year, I gave up resolutions for One Word to be my guiding principle throughout the year. This year, I selected the word "Gratitude". Let me start by saying how grateful I am to work at Rosedale and for all the support received from students, staff, and parents! What will your One Word be for this year?

Not only has she been with LPS her entire career as a teacher, principal, and parent, her most recent position was as the Director of Elementary Programs. This makes her very familiar with our school and staff and how elementary schools operate. I know we at Rosedale along will all the other buildings throughout the district are thrilled to have her as our new superintendent. Great things are happening at Rosedale!
