Founder's Day

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! This week, we celebrated our annual PTA Founder's Day. At the event, two members of our Rosedale community were recognized for their outstanding efforts at the school. Mrs. Hill, our office secretary received a Shining Star award for outstanding staff member and Rebecca Woloszyn, former PTA president and coordinator for after-school science club, received a Shining Star award for outstanding volunteer.  It truly takes a community to make each child successful and these two people are remarkable examples of what makes our school so special. If you happen to see Mrs. Hill or Ms. Woloszyn, be sure to congratulate them. And thank you to ALL our staff members and volunteers for making Rosedale such a special place.

MEET THE ROSEDALE STAFF
Mrs. Hill - Secretary
Hello My Rosedale Family,

That is how I feel about all of you. I truly care about all of our students and staff.  While you are entrusting your children with us here throughout the day I do the best I can to make them feel cared
about and safe. I began my LPS career as a noon duty helper in my own kid’s elementary school.  I was also room-mother coordinator for 8 years and very active in PTA.  My son Steven (41) is married to Laura and they have two children, Justin (12) and Megan (10).  I also have a son Adam (39) and a daughter Susan (35) who is engaged to be married this summer in July.  Then I will have a son-in-law Jimmy!

My husband, Jim, and I have been married for 43 years.  We have a rescue dog “Harley Low-Rider Hill” who is a mix of dachshund, yorkie and shitzu.  He is 7 years old and a very loveable lap dog.
My passion is playing cards (tournaments), doing crafts and being with my children and their families.  Sharing memories with family and friends and helping whenever or wherever needed.
Retirement is in my future, not quite sure of the exact date but maybe next year.  I love being here so much it is very difficult for me to leave. Office Out!

PTA POINTS
  • We are still collecting Campbell's Soup Labels
  • Pizza Kit orders due on Monday!
  • Congratulations to our Founder's Day award winners Mrs. Hill and Ms. Woloszyn!

Did you know that Livonia has one of the largest and most active PTAs in the state of Michigan? Each building in Livonia has its own unit with a board of volunteer members. These units coordinate events, raise money, and build partnerships between the schools and community. Rosedale is lucky to have such wonderful group of volunteers and it was nice to recognize them for all they do at our recent Founder's Day ceremony. Great things are happening at Rosedale!

Character Counts!

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! For the past six years, Livonia Public Schools has been measuring our school climate by surveying students and staff and collecting feedback from focus groups. Two of the key areas that came up were a desire to feel safe at school and also a need for problem solving skill development for our students. To this end, our district will be integrating nine character elements into classrooms at every grade level. Many of these elements will look familiar to our Rosedale students. The entire list can be seen in the image below. Our goal is to create a common vocabulary and climate of respect throughout all grades and all buildings. It's nice to work at a place where climate and character are valued by all. Great things are happening at Rosedale!

Did you know that Rosedale students have an opportunity every month to design a poster for our character habit? This month, students are working on posters that reflect the habit "Put First Things First". Each classroom votes for one poster to represent the classroom and then they move on to the entire school. Next week, we will select one poster from the top entries and the winner will be recognized on our school page and also gets to design the poster on canvas with our art teacher, Mr. Masters. Great things are happening at Rosedale!

What New Thing Have You Tried Lately?

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! One of the questions I ask teachers (and myself) throughout the year is "What new thing have you tried lately?".  It might be a new technology in the classroom, it might be a new way to teach a lesson, it might be a new project that has never been tried before. People are often afraid to try new things, because it opens up the chance to fail. That's okay! At Rosedale, we try to view failure as the "First Attempt In Learning". Encourage your child to try new things and take chances. They may not be successful the first time, but with time and effort, they may achieve things they never thought possible. What new thing have you tried lately?

Erin Casucci - 4th Grade Teacher
Hello!  I’m Erin Casucci, a fourth grade teacher here at Rosedale.  I’ve been teaching at Rosedale/Johnson for my entire career, and this is my 20th year!  I taught third grade for sixteen years before moving to fourth grade.  I love teaching the older students; they are independent and are able to direct their own learning.  They come to class with tons of prior knowledge and experiences, and are excited to share what they know!  I have been married to my husband, Cass, for fifteen years and we have two awesome kids named Charlie (13) and Will (11).  They are super active, and are tons of fun to be around!  As a family we love to go skiing, travel Up North, go boating and watch movies.  We also have two adorable Goldendoodles, Apollo and Gemini!

My professional goal this year is to incorporate more technology into my classroom.  I’m doing this by using Kahoot! for an interactive online review  for upcoming tests.  I’m using Class Dojo to communicate with parents and to motivate students to have better behavior.  We are using the Google Classroom to complete online assignments, and Google Slides to create and share online presentations.  I’m also allowing the students to bring their own devices to school every day to support our curriculum.  These are difficult changes for me, but the students use the technology effortlessly.

Five words to describe my classroom are: Engaging, interesting, caring, friendly, and collaborative.

PTA POINTS
  • Get ready for the last box tops contest of the year! Starting Wednesday, February 17th - Friday, February 26th any student who brings in a box top will get a Buy One Get One FREE Game certificate for ZAP ZONE!  A big thank you to everyone who has already turned in box tops! We have collected almost 8,000 box tops this year which earned our school $800! Our goal was to raise over $1000 and we're almost there! Every box top helps! (Limit one Zap Zone certificate per student)

DID YOU KNOW that we had nearly 100 girls here for our 4th annual Daddy Daughter Dance? That's 75% of our Rosedale girls. We will be having a mother son event on April 27 at the Zap Zone. It should be a fun event for our Rosedale boys. We are always looking for ways to involve our families with fun events at the school. Great things are happening at Rosedale!

Developing Good Habits

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! At Rosedale, we spend a lot of time working with students about developing good habits. Specifically, we talk about Stephen Covey's 7 Habits. Each month we focus on a new habit and have a celebration at the end of the month with a poster winner and also our Students of the Month. It's a great way to reinforce positive behaviors of our students. The nice thing about developing positive habits is that they are not just something we do at school, but become something that we do all the time. They become a lifestyle. We hope that is the case with our students and the 7 Habits. Congratulations to our newest award winners and to ALL students who are living the habits!

MEET THE ROSEDALE STAFF
Debbie Bartnick - 3rd Grade Teacher
My name is Debbie Bartnick and I have spent my entire teaching career at Rosedale/Johnson Elementary.  I have taught third grade for all but one year.  I love teaching third grade because it is a year when students learn more independence and responsibility.  They are eager, collaborative learners, which ties right in to our academic programs. I am married and have two grown children.  Away from school we enjoying walking and riding our bikes in Kensington Park, golfing, traveling, taking our grand puppy, Echo, for walks, and relaxing and reading on our deck.

I am piloting the new Everyday Math Program this year.  I am enjoying teaching it because there are plenty of opportunities to use our white boards and it promotes deeper thinking and reasoning from the students.   Using more technology is something that I am trying to do more of in the classroom this year.

The five words I chose to describe my classroom were:  Welcoming.  Safe.  Energizing.  Comfortable.  Collaborative

PTA POINTS
  • Any student who is interested in making a Youth Making a Difference project or doing a board may begin working on this.

Did you know that we have a minimum of three adults at all times that provide supervision for our Rosedale students during recess and lunch times? The afternoon is covered by teachers and the lunch hour is covered by parents and PESG workers. If you are interested in joining our lunch supervisor crew, please contact the main office and we will provide you with more information. Great things are happening at Rosedale!
