The Power of Yet

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! At this week's "Celebrate Monday" Assembly, I asked all the students to share with a partner something they were good at. This was to help build the concept of Confidence with our students by celebrating what we do well. But it got me thinking that as someone who promotes a growth mindset, where true learning takes place by practicing, developing, and improving, I could have asked the question, "What are you not good at...YET?" When we frame our thinking around that word yet, it reminds us that the only thing standing between us and success is practice and hard work. The power of yet is also a pathway to building confidence!

MEET THE LPS STAFF
Pat Schuchardt - Assistant Supervisor for Food Services

I have been in school  Food Service for 20 years, starting my career working in the kitchens. I have been with Livonia Schools since Sept 2011. When I started here, our elementary schools were serving "pre-packaged" frozen food (much like airline meals) and since that time, all of our kitchens are now preparing and cooking meals for our students. Since my arrival here, we have also implemented breakfast at all of our buildings.

Food Service has a staff of one hundred employees- all who care deeply and work hard to provide those important meals that help our students do better in school. I am VERY proud of how the Food Service staff have adjusted to the ever changing food regulations and rules.

I live in Belleville with my husband on a small farm, where we raise chickens, have horses and a host of other animals- dogs, cats and birds. I have two grown daughters, one married and living in Chicago who has my only grandchild, who is 20 months old. My other daughter lives in Portland, Oregon, and just got engaged in November-so a wedding is in the plans for the future.

My goal is always to provide the children of our District with the best quality meals possible. My challenge is following all of the USDA mandated requirements and rules, while making meals that kids actually like to eat, and doing all of this within a budget.

My five words describing LPS-  Providing kids a better future.

PTA POINTS
  • PTA meeting 6:30 pm on Thursday, February 2 (childcare provided)
  • After School Science on Tuesday, February 7

Did you know that all Livonia teachers use a Priority Standards guide to create lesson plans? These standards are taken straight from the Common Core and target the standards that have the most impact on student achievement. These targets are then posted in classrooms so that they are communicated clearly to students. Our teachers put in a lot of effort to make sure each lesson is the absolute best it can be for students. Great things are happening at Rosedale!

Confidence

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! This month, our students are learning about confidence. What does it look like and how can we develop it? We kicked off the month with a video of children explaining what confidence means to them. Our quotes of the week have focused on confidence. Even our hallways signs are displaying what confidence means. We have a lot great messages for students about confidence, but as one of the students on the video stated so well, "Confidence is something that is found within." Our goal is to help students internalize those messages of confidence and make them their own. When students believe in themselves, they can do wonders! Talk with your child this week about confidence and remind them that good things happen when we believe in ourselves.

Stephen Taylor - Coordinator of Student Services
I had wonderful parents and just visited my father on the eve of his 92nd birthday. My older brother (by 6 minutes) and I were born in Detroit but, for most of my "formative" years, we were raised in Chagrin Falls, OH where I was the only Detroit Tigers and Lions fan - which meant I was always able to choose number 6 (Al Kaline) on baseball and fast and slow pitch softball teams I was on - even through my undergraduate college education at Franklin and Marshall College. I was also an Eagle Scout as a youth - Troop 150. F&M provided an outstanding education and I got into every graduate program and chose the University of Michigan's Combined Program in Education and Psychology under the direction of Dr. William C. Morse - who also was a consultant to the Livonia Public Schools. I earned an MA in Psych., Ed.S. in School Psych. and a Ph.D. in Education and Psychology.  Most importantly, I met my wife, who was a student in the same graduate program and, to this day, the most wonderful person I have ever met.

We have three young adult children - all who make us very happy and proud.  Our oldest son is married and worked for Cal Ripkin, Jr. building youth sports facilities before becoming an Urban Planner and they are expecting their first child. Our daughter, has an economics and psych. degree but is a musician and now a project manager for a California firm that does drug testing for MLB, NBA, and the Olympics. My youngest son is a talented percussionist who is now a jazz drummer performing with many groups all over the mid-west and east coast. He also loves teaching and is beloved by students, providing private lessons and contracting with a local school district to teach percussionist sectionals.

In my career I have worked as a school psychologist and supervisor of special education as well as an Assistant Professor of Psychology and Adjunct Professor (U of D, U of M- Ann Arbor).  I have been a fully Licensed Clinical Psychologist - currently maintaining a small private practice in Ann Arbor. I left Ann Arbor for Livonia in 1997 and was a school psychologist and department chair before become a Coordinator of Student Services in 2006. I supervise psychology and social work and share the responsibility for Elementary Resource Room and our special education center programs with Dr. Katie Dodge, who, along with the other coordinators and directors, make me enthusiastic to go to work every day.

My major goal is to support the ongoing professional development and professionalism (which can be defined as being dedicated to helping students, families and staff) of all of the staff I supervise, evaluate and/or with whom I consult.

LPS is caring, self-reflective, dedicated, significantly stressed, and highly professional.

Heroes

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! Anyone who has been in my office, knows that I am a BIG Superman fan. The Superman decor makes the office a fun place for students and has even sparked a lot of positive conversations with parents who are fans as well. As much as I like superheroes, I prefer real heroes to look up to. Some of my real life heroes include Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.  This month, we will be celebrating the life and message of one of those heroes. Please take a moment to watch the video clip of Dr. King with your family and talk about how each of us can make a positive difference in the world if we have a dream and are willing to work to make it a reality!

MEET THE LPS STAFF
Steve Archibald - Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Programs & District Services

This is my 27th year with Livonia Public Schools.  I have worked at Frost, Churchill, Stevenson, and Central Office in a number of capacities including teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal, and Central Office administrator.  I met my wife when we were both teachers at Churchill.  We have been married for 23 years and have two beautiful daughters who are both currently in college.

A goal for this year is to revise the practices used at the secondary level related to student suspension.  The intent is to identify alternatives to suspension that effectively address undesirable conduct, promote desirable behavior, and reduce the amount of time students are out of class due to suspension.

Five words to describe LPS: pride, excellence, community, caring, welcoming

2017

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! I'm so excited to start 2017 with all our Rosedale students on Monday. It will be a special Celebrate Monday assembly as we come together for the first time in the calendar year. We will talk about our theme for the month, which is confidence, and I will also share out my One Word Resolution for the year which is kindness. Each year I pick a theme and try to model and teach that theme in what I say and do. Last year it was gratitude and this year is kindness. I wish all of you the best for the new year and I encourage you to keep to any resolutions, goals, or even your one word. The new year is a time for new beginnings, but so is each and every day. Make them count!

MEET THE LPS STAFF
Katie Dodge - Coordinator of Student Services

I am so excited to be featured in Wennstrom’s Weekly. I love working with the Rosedale staff and Mr. Wennstrom. Thank you for this opportunity!

I have been working in Livonia Public Schools for 15 years. During this time I have held many different roles. I started as a substitute teacher and then was hired as an elementary teacher. I have taught grades 2-6 and different schools in Livonia (Hoover, Coolidge, Cooper, Webster, Riley, Johnson). I have also taught grades 5 and 6 as a Cross-Categorical Center teacher at both Riley and Johnson. I spent 3 years as the Elementary Teacher Consultant for the district. Currently, I am one of four Coordinators of Student Services.
In my role as Coordinator, I work with multiple elementary schools to support students with special education needs. I work collaboratively with staff to problem solve and find the best ways to ensure success for all students.  I am also blessed to supervise the Visually Impaired Department and Coolidge Center for students with Autism. I love that each day in this role I am able to provide support and guidance to staff, students, and families. Every day I wake up filled with gratitude for my son, Crosby. He is an absolute joy and gift to my life. Crosby is 21 months old and full of energy.

One of my goals for the next year is to share and promote the use of Snap and Read across the district. This is a wonderful online tool available for students and staff to use to make text accessible. It will read anything on Google Chrome out loud and can level the text to make it easier to read.  Snap and Read will translate text as well.

My five words for LPS are Student-Driven, Dedicated, Innovative, Collaborative, Trustworthy.

PTA POINTS
  • PTA Meeting Thursday, January 12 at 6:30 pm (Following Title I Parent Meeting)
  • Popcorn Sales on Friday, January 13
  • After School Science Thursday, January 19
  • Skate Night Thursday, January 26 6:00-8:00 pm at Riverside Arena

Did you know that Title I is a federal program that gives money to schools to provide academic intervention for struggling students? These funds are used by our school to hire paraprofessionals, purchase reading intervention materials, computer software programs, and even promote family outreach and information. It's these funds that make our Title I parent night and the giving away of family memberships to local institutions possible. We hope to see you Thursday night at 6:30 pm. Great things are happening at Rosedale!
