Bringing History to Life

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! This week our fourth grade students gave presentations during the "Living Wax Museum". This was the culminating event for weeks of reading, researching, and preparing. One of the many things that I love about this activity is that the students get to pick who they research and they decide what they put into their presentation. Yes, they have a guideline and format to follow, but they also have a lot of choice and freedom. It's learning activities like this that students remember for many years. My guess is that most of these students will be able to tell about their historical figure for the rest of their lives. I'm so happy that our Rosedale students have opportunities for activities and events like this and I was proud to see so many family members here for the event as well. Thanks to our fourth grade team for bringing history to life for our students!

Mr. Roboto

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! Growing up, I was fascinated by robots. I loved books, movies, and anything that involved robots. This week, we had the opportunity to have the high school robotics team come into our school and give an assembly with the robots they had made. I quickly saw that our Rosedale students had the same fascination with robots that I  had as a child! In addition to the math and science that is required for the robotics team, the high school students talked about how they demonstrate the character traits like grit and confidence while working as a team. My hope is that the event sparked interest in some of our students to become future designers, builders, and engineers. We may have many future members of the high school robotics team right here in our own building!

MEET THE LPS STAFF
Larry Grezak - Principal of Coolidge Elementary School

After earning a business degree at the University of Detroit and working eight years in manufacturing, I decided that I needed a new career. In September of 2004, I quit my job and started attending Madonna University as a full time student. In 2006, I graduated with a language arts major and an elementary school minor. I completed my student teaching in the fourth grade level at Roosevelt Elementary School in Livonia. I have spent time teaching in the third, fourth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. In 2011, I completed my master's degree with a focus on learning disabilities.

During my time as Webster Elementary School's School Improvement Chairperson, I started to get more and more excited about the things that I could do to help the entire the school. I went back to school one more time and completed a K-12 Administrators program at Eastern Michigan University. In October of 2013, I was extremely happy to be named the newest principal of Coolidge Elementary School and to continue my career in education with Livonia Public Schools.

My wife was a long distance runner on our track team in college, and we have been happily married for almost 18 years. We have two wonderful boys who are ten and nine years old. Rece is in fourth grade and Brody is in third. Switching careers was one the best decisions that I have ever made.  I am grateful to have ended up in Livonia Public Schools and our Coolidge team is an amazing group of people to work with.  I feel very lucky.

Five words that describe Coolidge – Growth Mindset, High Character, Safe

Did you know that each year, all schools are required to publish an Annual Education Review? The AER is posted on our school website and gives the demographic and program information of our school and also includes current and previous testing results. It's a useful piece of information that we provide for all Rosedale families and our community. You can visit our school's AER by clicking in our "Quick Links" section on our Rosedale web page. Welcome to the Family

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! This week, each of the elementary schools hosted a kindergarten parent information night. The purpose of the meeting is to give an overview to parents on our kindergarten programs, answer any questions they may have, and most importantly welcome them to the Livonia Public Schools family. One of my goals as principal is to make sure that every family and every child feels welcomed at school. This is why we invite folks into our buildings for informational meetings, PTA events, and awards assemblies. We don't want to just tell you about the great things happening at school, we want you to be a part of them! So, on behalf of all those in Livonia Public Schools to our incoming students and parents: Welcome to the family!

Quote of the Week

MEET THE LPS STAFF
Theresa O'Brien - Chief Academic Officer

I am new to the role of Chief  Academic Officer after being a principal for the past 6.5 years at Cooper Upper Elementary and Hayes Elementary. Prior to being a principal I have taught in the district since student teaching in 1988, teaching all grades first through sixth. I have worked at Washington, Garfield, Roosevelt, and Cooper. I also worked in the Curriculum Department for four years as a Mathematics Facilitator.

On a personal level I am married to Andy and am the mom of two boys, Ian and Brady, who are in their 20’s. We live in Livonia with our 2 year old dog Boston.

I am excited to begin my new role, but will miss being in a school and seeing teachers and students each day. A goal I have is to keep students at the center of decision making. I want to make sure we are thinking of the best ways to prepare them for work of the 21st century.

Livonia Public Schools has been a part of my life for over twenty years and the five words I would use to describe LPS: Inspiring, Positive Relationships, and Abundant Opportunities.

Did you know in the upcoming weeks and months you may notice some play structures being removed from the playground at our school.  An assessment was conducted on all the playgrounds in the district to determine the condition of our structures.  This assessment called for some structures to be removed this spring. Please know, as part of the initial planning process for the 2013 bond, the District has set aside funds for playground equipment and updates for k-4 and 5-6 elementary buildings. To that end, a committee has been established to research new designs, equipment, and equity for the playgrounds in LPS. We look forward to sharing more information with you as this process gets underway. Great things are happening at Rosedale!

Out of this World!

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! This week, we kicked off our March is Reading Month theme of "Reading is out of this World". It's going to be a fun month filled with outer space themed activities, a visit from the high school robotics team, and even a sky dome planetarium! Our goal is to get students excited about reading and also to stimulate their love of science and technology. Who knows? Some of our Rosedale students may be the next group of astronauts into space. Be sure to check with your child about their reading goals and ask them to share the great activities they are doing this month. I'll be sure to post pictures as well!

MEET THE LPS STAFF
Keith McDonald - Assistant Director of Human Resources

I grew up in Canton and currently live there, as well.  I am married to Tara, who I met in grade school.  We have a very active two-year old named William who takes up all of my time when I am not at LPS.  My LPS career began in the winter of 2000 when I student taught at Churchill High School.  I was hired there the next fall.  I taught PE and science for seven years at Churchill before becoming the scheduling assistant principal.  After four years, I was transferred to Franklin where I was the business assistant principal for three years.  My next stop was back at Churchill where I was the principal for the last three years.  Now, I am on to my next career adventure as the Assistant Director of Human Resources.  I am excited to begin my new role, but will miss the everyday interaction with the kids.

For the remainder of the year, I have two goals in mind.  First, I want to do everything I can to make the transition go smoothly for the students, parents, and staffs of the closing schools.  I also want to continue to work with the building level administrators and teachers as the wrap up the first year of the 5D+ evaluation system.  With evaluations come a lot of stress and concern.  I want to work to minimize that stress and focus on the professional growth potential the tool offers.

When I think of LPS, I think both the staff and community.  These are the five words I would use to describe LPS:  caring, dedicated, supportive, integrity, and grit.

Did you know that our Reading Month theme actually takes months of planning? It begins in the summer with our PTA budget meeting as they generously dedicate all the funds necessary to make it happen. Then our committee led by Mrs. Merchant & Mrs. Benson plan out all the activities and prizes and share and coordinate with staff. It's a lot of work, but it is worth it to see the joy on the students' faces as they experience the love of reading. Great things are happening at Rosedale!
