Spring Fling

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! When I first came to Rosedale, I remember the PTA president coming to me with an idea for something new...a Spring Fling!  It's hard to believe that this is my fourth Spring Fling at Rosedale and they just keep getting better and better.  Last year we added our technology basket raffle to the event and this year we added an outdoor concert.  What a great opportunity for our Rosedale families to gather, celebrate, and enjoy some time together at our wonderful school.  I'd like to thank our current PTA board and volunteers for organizing the event and our past boards and volunteers for their vision.  School success is built on relationships and events like this help build those home-school relationships!

Mr. Murphy led a great music performance!
Pony rides are always fun!

Congratulations to our Students of the Month!

Lisa Ferguson - Lunch/Recess Monitor
Hello -   My name is Lisa Ferguson and I am one of the moms who supervise lunch and recess at Rosedale.  I grew up in Howell Michigan and have an Bachelors of Arts degree from Michigan State University.  I am happily married to my husband Jason and we three wonderful children, Zack who is 12, Isabella who is 10, and Abigail who is 8 and is our last student at Rosedale.  We also have a French bulldog named Walt who has a significant hearing loss and knows sign language.

Outside of Rosedale, I love to create. I am an avid Embroiderer, needle felter, crocheter, knitter and all around try anything once kind of artist. I also enjoy writing a daily blog that features the antics of our families lives.

What I love about Rosedale?  I love being a part of the students day. Getting to know each and every student by name and personality is such a reward to me.  Rosedale is more than just a school, it truly is a family.

Julie Rainey - Lunch/Recess Monitor
My name is Julie Rainey, and I am a noon monitor at Rosedale.  I began working as a noon monitor last year, but my family has been with Rosedale since my oldest started Kindergarten here 6 years ago.  My oldest daughter, Ashlyn, is now in fifth grade at Johnson, and my youngest daughter, Ryan, is a fourth grader still at Rosedale.  I have loved my time at Rosedale and would love to stay on as a noon monitor even as my youngest graduates from here this year, however, my husband Chris, and I will be moving our family to Germany this summer.  We are all very excited to start our new adventure and also sad to be leaving.
My favorite thing about Rosedale is the people – hands down!!  Love the staff, love the students, love the PTA and all the relationships (friendships) I have formed over the past several years!
When I’m not at the school I love to hang with my family and friends,  spend time at the pool or softball field (again with family and friends), and read a good book once in a while.

Did you know that Rosedale received over $1200 of books through the Livonia Rotary Club?  In addition to providing readers for our Early Literacy Volunteer (ELVs) program, the Rotary club also generously provides money for our building to purchase books for each grade level.  Partnerships like this really help our Rosedale students.  Great things are happening at Rosedale!

Hi Folks, Jon Wennstrom here! I recently looked up the definition of the world volunteer and this is what I found. Vol-un-teer: A person who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task.  However, a volunteer means so much more to those who work at a school. For us, it is a person who selflessly serves the students and staff by helping with learning stations, one on one reading and math support, or "other duties as necessary".  Volunteers are also the ones that make possible our after school events like our upcoming Spring Fling!  Our staff realizes all the great things that are possible because of our volunteers and this week we recognized them through our Volunteer Tea. Together, we can make every child successful!

In addition to our Volunteer Tea, we also had our Early Literacy Volunteer (ELVs) celebration!

Melissa Peterson - Lunch/Recess Monitor

Hi!  My name is Melissa Peterson and I am one of the moms who supervise lunch recess at Rosedale.   I am a Toledo native and have an undergraduate degree in accounting from the University of Toledo. My husband, Mark and I met in an unusual way.  Mark is from Flint.  Our jobs brought us to this area and a genuine matchmaker did the rest.   We have been married for 13 years.  We have one son, Nicholas, who’s 10 and in 4th grade.  Mark is a Database Administrator by profession.   Nicholas is quickly following his dad’s lead with a love of computers.

Outside of Rosedale, I love to cook and try new recipes on my “test kitchen” (also known as Mark and Nicholas).  I can be found at the Rec Center doing Zumba and Yoga.  I also love to travel and putter in my garden.

What I love about Rosedale?  It’s pretty simple.  The teachers are top-notch.  The school is small and the kids are individuals and not a number.  It’s a great place to start your education in Livonia Public Schools.

Birthe K - Lunch/Recess Monitor
My name is Birthe Korasiak. I am married and have two daughters, Cassandra age 14 and Nellie age 10. Both used to be students at Rosedale. My husband and I grew up in Germany and when he received a job offer in the States 17 years ago we decided to move and start a new life. We go back to Germany frequently to visit both our families.

I have been a monitor for the past three years and enjoy being with your kids.
Rosedale has always been my favorite school not just because it is on the smaller side but the atmosphere and relationship between staff, and staff and parents is so warm and welcoming.

When I am not at Rosedale you might see me running on Hines Drive training for an upcoming race or sitting at my sewing machine making headbands for my new business.

Did you know that Rosedale has nearly 70 volunteers that help us out throughout the year?  Being a small school has its advantages when people feel like a close-knit community!  Also, most of our lunch and recess monitors are Rosedale parents as well.  If you are interested in volunteering or becoming a monitor in the fall, please be sure to see me or your child's teacher when we have our Open House.  Great things are happening at Rosedale!

Round Up!

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! This week we had our annual kindergarten "Round Up".  It's such a treat to see the new students come into their new school and prepare for a whole new adventure.  Their eyes are wide with wonder and the teachers and staff are just as excited as they are!  I love talking with parents and answering their questions and letting them know that I remember all those same feelings as a parent when my daughters started school.  It's a time of new beginnings amidst the winding down of the current year.  It reminds us that the school year is not really ending, but just beginning for a whole new group of learners!

Kelly Walder - Corresponding Secretary
I am Kelly Walder and my hubby Tom and I have 2 sons, Adam is a 4th grader at Rosedale and Matthew in a 6th grader at Webster. I'm in my 25th year working as a sales rep for American Label in Canton, which is a flexible job that thankfully allows me to help when I can at Rosedale. I'm also involved in scouting, which is another great program for kids. This is my 7th and final year as a Rosedale parent, and I have been a PTA board member for 6 of these great years. I sure will miss Rosedale and all of the friends I've made along the way!
I love all the things that Rosedale does to help each student succeed and enjoy themselves while doing so. There's so many opportunities and activities going on at our school, and it's all done by caring staff and parents. It's overwhelming at first as to how all of this is managed, though Mr Wennstrom and his staff sure do a great job at making it all go smoothly. My personal favorite thing about Rosedale is the diversity of the student body and my sons have been lucky to have been exposed to all of the cultures and traditions.
In my free time I like pina colada's, getting caught in the rain... kidding! I enjoy turning off the busyness of the day by turning off the electronics and playing board games or heading out into nature in some way with family and friends. When I don't have time for that, I'm always up for a good Wes Anderson movie or a good book.

Sue Mullins - Treasurer
For those that do not know me my name is Sue Mullen, I am the treasurer of the Rosedale PTA. My son Nicholas is currently in the 3rd grade and his teacher is Mrs. Boggs.  We were new to Rosedale when Nicholas started kindergarten, besides Nicholas I’m the mother of 4 college students, and have been married to my husband Dave for 25 years.

My favorite thing about Rosedale is the dedicated and caring staff. They help provide such a positive experience for the students, and it’s also been so much fun to meet all the wonderful parents along the way.

In my spare time I work full time as a Registered Nurse at Karmanos Cancer Institute. When I’m not working my husband Dave and I are our children’s #1 fan’s attending gallery displays, collegiate track meets, and Westland Rocket soccer games.

Did you know that Livonia Public Schools has the largest PTA in the state of Michigan?  It truly is a point of pride to have such a well recognized and well respected organization here in our school!  Our PTA organizes events, raises funds for classroom projects, and supports teachers through a variety of ways.  If you are not a part of the PTA yet, I hope you will consider joining in the fall. Great things are happening at Rosedale!

A Chance to Shine!

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! This week we celebrated our "Arts, Beats, Eats, & Books" at Rosedale.  Our traditional Ice Cream Social has grown into an Art and Music showcase and first rate book fair.  One of the things I love about this event is that it gives students a chance to shine in a variety of areas.  We certainly have a strong academic program here, but it's nice to show the talents of our students with our art and music programs as well.  Hearing the students sing and looking at their fabulous art projects really makes me proud and I'm sure all the parents and staff feel the same! And to top it all off, students get to enjoy some ice cream and a have a chance to buy an interesting book at our book fair.  Events like this take a lot of work and preparation, but the smiles on the faces of the students makes it all worth while!

Thank you Rosedale Teachers for ALL you do!
This week was Teacher Appreciation Week, but I want our Rosedale staff to know they are appreciated EVERY DAY!!  They are making the world a better place one student at a time.

Brittany Niculas - Recording Secretary

Hi, my name is Brittany and I am part of the Rosedale PTA! My family and I have been a part of the Rosedale family for three years now. I have two students here, one in kindergarten and one in third grade. They both love the school and we can't wait to continue their journey here in future years!

I absolutely love the diversity we have here at Rosedale!

I enjoy spending time with my boys & watching them play sports. (Keeps me busy!) I am also a full time nursing student :)

Nicole Sturgeon - Membership Chair

We moved to Livonia in March of 2012, which makes this our 4th school year as a Rosedale family. Elizabeth is in Mrs. Boggs's third grade class and Jakob is in Mrs. Merchant's first grade class.

You just can't beat the people at Rosedale!!! The entire community is kind and caring.

Outside of school (as a teacher, that isn't very often)..... When I'm not taking the kids to hockey or their other activities? So this is really asking what would I do if I had nothing but time on my hands? I would spend my time doing crafty stuff, riding my road bike, and traveling to new places.

Did you know our kindergarten round up is this week?  Every year, we provide an opportunity for incoming students to visit the classroom and participate in fun activities, while parents get an overview and orientation.  It's a fun and exciting time for parents and students!  If you know someone who is considering registering their child for kindergarten, but hasn't enrolled yet, please let them know to call our office for round up.  Great things are happening at Rosedale!

Keeping in Step

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here!  As you are probably aware, the MEAP test has been replaced this year by a new state assessment called M-STEP.  The new test is on the computer instead of the booklets we used in the past and it's much more in depth than previous tests the students have taken.  Like all the schools in Michigan, this is our first time with the new assessment and we are learning as we go.  This year's results will not be used for our school rating as the state is still determining what the score indicators will be.  As always, I have told our students "Do your best, but don't stress!".  So far our students seem to be doing well and I wanted to make sure I kept parents informed on the new state testing procedures.

Tara Consolino - 2nd Vice President

Howdy! I’m Ava’s Mom also known as Tara Consolino and I am the 2nd Vice President of the Rosedale Elementary PTA and Chair of the Youth Making a Difference (YMAD) Committee. My family joined the Rosedale Family last year when our daughter Ava Bristol was in First Grade with Mrs. Nadon and she has continued on to Second Grade this year with Mrs. Benson. Together with my husband “Fuzzy” and Ava, we live in the neighborhood behind Rosedale with our 3 cats Ariel, Bianca and Kira.

My favorite thing about Rosedale outside the exemplary teaching staff, support staff and principal is actually our PTA. There is a genuine feeling of camaraderie at PTA sponsored events and meetings that it’s just another extension of family.

Outside of Rosedale I am the Director of Behavioral Care at a local area hospital and also a psychotherapist. When I’m not working or volunteering, our family enjoys camping in all seasons, fishing, hiking, and science experiments or taking our cats on walks in their stroller through the neighborhood. Yes, you read that correctly. It is a pleasure to be a part of the Rosedale Community. Make it a great rest of the school year and here’s to making 2015-2016 equally as great, if not better!

Did you know that every classroom at Rosedale has a minimum of two iPads??  This was made possible through our Title I funds and the generous assistance of our Rosedale PTA!!  They just recently arrived and teachers have had some initial training on how to use them in the classrooms. There are some pretty cool apps that can be used for Reading, Writing, Math, Science, Art, and History!  I will be sharing out more about our new iPads in future updates. Great things are happening at Rosedale!
