Heart of the School

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! This week, we had the opportunity to recognize a VERY special person at Buchanan....Mrs. Pepple!! If you have had any interaction with our school, then you know how special she is.  She is the person that greets visitors at the school, welcomes new families at registration, cares for sick or injured students, and answers questions on the phone.  In short, she is the heart of the school!  What makes Mrs. Pepple so special is that she makes EVERYONE feels special.  We are so fortunate to have her at Buchanan and this week, we had the opportunity to tell her how we feel.  If you see Mrs. Pepple, be sure to thank her for all she does each day for every child!

PTA POINTS
  • Spring Fling Raffle Basket Donations

We are still in need of basket donation items. Each class is assigned a theme for a basket to be raffled off at our spring fling event on May 31st. Donated items will be collected to create the raffle baskets. Cash donations will also be accepted. Please label all items with  “Spring Fling Donation” and your child’s teacher’s name. Please send in all donations by May 20th. A flyer will be sent home closer to the event with more information. Thanks for your support.

  • PTA Family Tigers Game
Join us for our annual PTA Tigers Game outing on Sunday, June 9th!! The Detroit Tigers will be playing the Minnesota Twins at 1:10 PM. As an added bonus, the kids will have the chance to ride the ferris wheel and carousel for free because Sundays are Kids Day! After the game, they are also allowed to run the bases. The PTA has reserved 85 tickets in section 214. Each ticket will be $22. Tickets are sold at face value-this is not a fundraiser.  Tickets will be sold on a first come, first serve basis. Please sign up with the amount of tickets you would like to purchase and then send a check made out to Buchanan PTA or cash (exact change only) to school no later than May 1st. Any unsold/unpaid tickets will be returned to Comerica Park. Any questions, please contact Nikki Watson at nalquiza@twmi.rr.com. We will set up a ticket pickup date & time once we receive the tickets.

Did you know that Governor Gretchen Whitmer came to Livonia Public Schools on Thursday? Mrs. Pepple and I were fortunate to join many educators and community members for her presentation. It was a great opportunity to be informed and to represent our school and community. Great things are happening at Buchanan!

Stayin' Alive

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! This week our staff had a training on the use of our new AED (automated external defibrillator) machine that is located in the main lobby. The machine can be used if someone is in cardiac distress. In addition to the machine, we had a training on CPR and basic first aid. For those of you who have had the training, you know that the rhythm used for chest compression is to the tune of Stayin' Alive. It's a quick and easy way to remember what to do in a stressful situation. Safety is always our first priority at Buchanan and this training was just another way we are preparing to keep all our students safe at school!

In celebration of Earth Day, we would like to invite all of you to our Garden Beautification project on Saturday April 27 from 10-2.  Weeding, cutting down over-growth and cleaning areas around the Buchanan garden sign will be our main focus. Did you know that the Rotary Club of Livonia puts on a free family event each year for Easter? On Saturday morning, all families are welcome to Rotary Park to register for the event beginning at 10:00 AM. At 11:30 AM, the egg hunt will begin and children will be able to turn in the plastic eggs they find for bags of candy. It's a free and fun family event and I will be working the Egg Hunt with my family. I hope to see some of our students there. Great things are happening at Buchanan!

Science Rocks!

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! This week, many of our Buchanan students participated in our annual Science Fair. It's a chance for students to explore areas of science that are of interest to them and complete a project of their own choosing. Projects were on display throughout the afternoon on Friday for students and parents to see. I'm proud of all the students who took part in this activity and I would like to thank Mrs. Blazek for organizing the event and providing medals for the students. We hope ALL of our students develop a love of learning at Buchanan that will grow throughout their lives!

PTA volunteers have joined forces to shower LPS bus drivers with some appreciation on May 7. 
 You may have noticed the donation boxes that were placed in your schools' offices. A few opportunities do remain for donating -  such as gift cards; packaged nuts, specialty chocolates, drinks and you choose wrapped items. Did you know that many of our Buchanan students joined hundreds of children from the Metro Detroit area for the Martian Marathon on Saturday? It was a culminating event for those who participated in the Mileage Club and wanted to finish the year with a "Fun Run". Thank you to Mrs. Trantham for organizing our club and coordinating this event! Great things are happening at Buchanan!
