Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! As we prepare to start our winter break, I thought it would be a good time to recount my many blessings. I've been fortunate to be able to serve at Rosedale for the past five years with an incredible staff and dedicated volunteers. It's been a joy to work with our students and to have the support of our Rosedale parents. My family has been healthy and happy. I truly couldn't ask for more. During this holiday season, take a few moments to reflect on the blessings you have and know that our Rosedale community has been a blessing to me.

Students had a fun time at our sing-a-long!

Tim Klan - Administrator for Information Technology
I have been working in the technology field for more than 23 years. I began my technology career in business, where I owned my own company that provided computer training and support to area businesses and local school districts.

In 1998, I accepted the position of Director of Technology for Garden City Public Schools, where I remained for 16 years. In March 2014, I was hired into my current position as Administrator of Information Technology with Livonia Public Schools.

As the Administrator of Information Technology, I am responsible for the overall planning, organization, and execution of all IT functions throughout the district. This includes directing all IT functions to meet staff and student requirements, as well as the development of new technical solutions. In addition, I also oversee the Pupil Accounting Department.
My wife Shelly has been a 1st grade teacher in Dearborn for 19 years. We have 2 boys Adam (12), and Noah (13) who are both currently in the MACAT program at Frost Middle School.
One of my goals for the next year is to revise our current system to improve communication and service for our staff and students.  This includes teaching our techs to update staff help desk requests more often as well as starting a Classroom Response Team (CRT) to try and address classroom technology issues more quickly.

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! This month, our students are focusing on the theme of Empathy. Empathy can be a difficult concept for students, because it's not just feeling sorry for someone, it is about "Seeing through their eyes, listening with their ears, and feeling with their heart". We've talked about it and also watched a few videos as well. I've included a short video that is geared toward adults to show the difference between empathy and sympathy. I hope it's helpful for our Rosedale families!

Ben Hillard - District Math & Science Coordinator
Hello Rosedale community! My name is Ben Hillard, and I am the Math & Science Curriculum Coordinator. Part of my responsibilities include coordinating materials and working with math and science teachers throughout the district to provide more meaningful instruction. I am in my second year in this role, and previously taught for 10 years in Livonia Public Schools. My teaching career took me through several elementary schools, including Randolph, Hayes, McKinley, and Webster. My wife, Gail, is also a teacher in Livonia Public Schools. She teaches third grade at Randolph Elementary. We have three children: Cole (8), Tate (6), and Charlotte (3). Between school and sports, we stay pretty busy at home.

One of my goals this year has been to communicate more effectively with teachers throughout the district. I’ve begun writing a short newsletter titled Math Minute to try to achieve this goal. As a longer term goal, I’d like to incorporate more authentic opportunities for critical thinking and problem solving into our science and math classrooms.

5 Words: Passionate, Dedicated, Determined, Committed, Community

  • Holiday Shop will be held Tuesday & Wednesday this week!
  • Next PTA meeting will be Thursday, January 12 at 6:30 pm (following Title I)

Did you know that our students go outside for recess unless the wind chill is below 15 degrees? On those days we have recess in the classrooms. Most days we go outside and the students need their winter clothing (hats, gloves, winter coats, snow pants and boots). The fresh air and exercise is good for the health of our students. Thank you for making sure they are properly dressed. Great things are happening at Rosedale!

Continuous Learning

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! Last week, I attended the MEMSPA conference (Michigan Elementary & Middle School Principals Association). It's a time to connect with other principals, learn from national speakers, and also to present to others. As an educator, I feel it's important to model for my staff and students the importance of continuous learning. This can be done through professional reading, taking classes or attending conferences. We are never done learning and hopefully our students learn this and apply to their lives as well. In what ways do you continue your learning either professionally or personally? Make sure to share with your child the importance of continuous learning!

Christine Fankell - Curriculum Coordinator for English Language Arts & Social Studies
Displaying IMG_9910.JPG

I'm from Iowa and a graduate of the University of Iowa and Iowa Writer's Workshop. Being a writer is a big part of who I am as an educator. Some of my most satisfying moments shared with students have been through poetry writing. I keep the poems my students write and hold them dear!

I have a 27 year career at Livonia Public Schools. I have taught grades 3rd-6th at Cass, Webster, and Hoover. I am currently the district K-12 Curriculum Coordinator for English language arts and social studies. That means that I now spend most of my time with teachers and other administrators planning for initiatives that support teaching and learning.

When I'm not working, I enjoy biking, gardening, knitting, and time with my family. I'm fortunate to have a daughter (Mackenzie) who lives with her husband only a mile away and also a son (Will) who has chosen to live in Grand Haven - a great place to visit! My grown-up children continue to be a big part of my life.

My goal for this year is to support K-6 teachers with teaching and assessing our district's Priority Standards. I have been enjoying working closely with our district Literacy Leaders to pilot a new report card that is based on these standards. It's challenging work that will have a positive impact on student learning!

Five words that describe LPS - welcoming, innovative, enlightening, stimulating, inspiring

  • Holiday Shop on Tuesday, December 20 & Wednesday, December 21 (volunteers needed!)

Did you know that Rosedale will be providing collections in our lobby to support the LPS Food Pantry, located in Franklin High School? The pantry is a service project that allows special education students the opportunity for work experience and also support Livonia families in need. While the pantry provides food items, it also provides many other care items like shampoo, deodorant, dental care products, and other hygiene products. Our collection bins will be for can and bottle returns for funding and also for non-food items like those listed above. A flyer will be sent out to our families as well. We are excited to join this worthy cause. Great things are happening at Rosedale!

Modeling the way

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! As adults, we often hear about importance of being role models for children. Whether as a parent or as an educator, students watch we do and often imitate it. I was reminded of this earlier in the week. On Monday, I was greeting students as they got off the bus and I said, "Welcome back, it's Monday, my favorite day of the week." One of the students instantly replied with a smile, "It's my favorite day too!". Now, I'm pretty sure if I would have said that Monday was my least favorite day, someone would have said the same thing. It made me realize how powerful the words and attitudes we share are. That's one of the reasons we have our "Celebrate Monday" assemblies. It's a chance to start the week off on a positive note and model for our students a love of learning and excitement to be in school. Always remember that we are models for the children...let's make sure we are a positive one!
Congratulations to our Students of the Month (for Respect)

Friday, November 18, 2016

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! Although I was born in Chicago, I spent most of my childhood growing up in rural northern Michigan. When I was in elementary school, there were no athletic opportunities and no clubs. My only activities were cub scouts and summer baseball. Rosedale students have many opportunities for enrichment including Spanish Club, Science Club, Crazy 8's Math Group, Scouts, and community athletic organizations. They also have many school activities that are sponsored by our PTA including Zap Zone, Trunk or Treat, Spring Fling and so many other events. I'm grateful to work in a place that provides so many opportunities for students beyond a quality education. The more opportunities our students have to participate in the more connections and experiences they will have. Thank you to all our staff and volunteers who make these opportunities possible!

Rosedale students are having fun with Pajama Day!

Ann Kosinki - Title I Paraprofessional
Hello! My name is Ann Kosinski. I am thrilled to be a new member of the Rosedale Team and Livonia Public Schools. I work as a Title 1 Parpro, where I provide Reading Intervention to kindergarten and second graders.

I grew up in Westland and I am the oldest of six. Being the oldest of six inspired me to peruse early childhood education. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood from Madonna University.  After graduation from Madonna University, I worked for Crestwood School District as The Director of Child Care Services. I live in Livonia with my husband Steve and our 10 year old son, Sean.  Sean attends Livonia Public Schools and is involved in Cub Scouts, soccer and theater.
A year ago we welcomed a furry member to our family, Murphy a Goldendoodle.

Goal: To provide guidance and support to help my students increase their reading comprehension and grow as readers

Five Words: Welcoming, positive, thoughtful, patient, motivated.

  • Thank you to all who helped with the Zap Zone family event!
  • There will not be a December PTA meeting

Red, White, and Blue

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! This week we celebrated Veterans Day. In an effort to honor our nation's veterans, we asked students to wear Red, White, and Blue on Friday. The students had a fun time as they wore their patriotic outfits. We also observed a moment of silence at 11:00 am throughout the entire school. I'm grateful for our incredible students and I know our students, staff, and entire Rosedale community are grateful for the sacrifices made by our veterans.

Kristina Mularski - Title I Paraprofessional

My name is Kristina Mularski.  After volunteering in several LPS libraries and classrooms for eleven years, I began working as a paraprofessional at Cooper Upper Elementary in 2015. I am currently working at both Cooper and Rosedale elementary schools, providing reading support to small groups.  My goal for this year is to help all of my students to become confident readers who discover the joy and wonder of reading.

In addition to my love of reading, I enjoy spending time with my family, especially my husband of 23 years and my 17 year old son. I travel up north as often as possible to visit my extended family.  I have discovered a love of backpacking, sharing many adventures with my brothers and sisters.  I also play volleyball, hike, and am continuously amazed by all the wonders of nature. I have a passion for nature photography, especially capturing images of dragonflies.

Five words I would use to describe Rosedale are:  welcoming, diverse, nurturing, cheerful, and cooperative.

  • Thank you for the generous baked good donation for the Election Day Bake Sale!! It was a great success and PTA made $800 to be used toward all the many programs and events at Rosedale!!! Thank you again for all your support!!!!

Did you know that Livonia Public Schools has moved to trimesters for the elementary schools? That's the reason our Parent Teacher Conferences were earlier this year and why our report cards won't come home until December. We are hopeful that this new model will allow more time on concepts before they are assessed and will allow students and teachers larger blocks of time between marking periods. We are focused on student growth and want to give the time to explore concepts. Great things are happening at Rosedale!

Friday, November 4, 2016

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! You may remember that last year, I participated in the No Shave November or "Movember" to help raise awareness for men's health. This year, I will be joined again by several LPS administrators as we say no to the razor for the month of November! There are so many good causes to help with, just like our Livonia Goodfellows. Our 2nd Grade team is once again coordinating a Canned Food Drive through the entire month. Each Friday, students may bring in canned food items for an opportunity to participate in a Friday activity like "bring a stuffed animal to school day". At Rosedale, we make service fun for students!

My goals are to reach a level of proficiency with my students in all content areas.  I will also support and assist the teachers in the areas that our students are in need of. I feel honored to be a part of the staff at Rosedale.

My Five Words for Rosedale Elementary are attentive, positive, responsible, safe and HAPPY!!

  • Nov 18th- Zap Zone School Event from 6:00-9:00. Flyer and registration will be coming home soon!!

Did you know that the term "Movember" actually comes from the Australian slang for mustache? It is often called a "Mo" and therefore the term Movember for growing out a mustache or beard. In America, we usually call it "No Shave November", but the cause is the same. This year, the principals from Livonia are again putting away the razors to raise awareness for men's health! Great things are happening at Rosedale!
Week 1 of "Movember"!

Parent Teacher Conferences

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! I hate admitting this, but growing up I hated parent teacher conferences. I used to plead with my parent not to go. "I'm getting good grades aren't I?, Why bother then?" But it never worked, they always went. When they came back, it was always the same report. "Jon is a good student, but he is just too social. He never stops talking in class." Maybe part of the reason I went into education was because I can empathize with the students. As an adult, I'm very glad that my parents went to my conferences and set a good example for me. I would like to thank all the parents, grandparents, guardians, and other caring adults that came to conferences and take the time to check in on our Rosedale students. Together, we can help each child succeed!

Stacy Jenkins - Communications Administrator

My name is Stacy Jenkins and I am the Communications Administrator for the district. My main responsibilities include: Writing and sending district-wide messages to our families and writing feature articles from our schools, Handling all media requests,  and Managing the main sections of the district’s website, Running LPS social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).

Prior to my current position, I was a journalist for 17 years. I graduated from Franklin High School and received my bachelor’s degree in journalism from Wayne State University. I worked as a reporter at several newspapers, including The Oakland Press and numerous editions in the Observer & Eccentric and Hometown Newspapers, where I also served as an editor for 10 years.  I started working for Livonia Public Schools four years ago, and I absolutely love my job! It’s very busy, but I love being “in the know” and I love informing. I am still able to do a lot of writing, which makes me very happy! In addition to newspaper writing, I was privileged to write a book for the Pine Lake Country Club in West Bloomfield, to commemorate the club’s 100th anniversary.

I am married to Dan and we have two children, Abby, age 17 and Evan, who is 11. They are students in Livonia Public Schools. It’s awesome to be a parent and an employee in the same district I’ve called home for my entire life!

A goal for this school year is to keep an open line of communication between our families and the district; to continue to be responsive and to offer the highest level of customer service to our parents. Our door is always open!

Five words to describe LPS would be: FAMILY of parents, staff, students!

  • We hope everyone had a great time at Trunk-or-Treat! Thank you very much to all of our Rosedale students, families, teachers, staff and volunteers! Also, we would like to thank everyone who donated candy and baked goods. We appreciate your continued support to our school.

Big Rocks

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! Earlier this week, I was talking with a friend who was going through some major life issues. As we talked, I began to look at some of my "troubles" through a very different lens. The things that I thought of as issues, paled in comparison to what my friend was going through. I guess it's human nature to focus on problems or issues we may have, but sometimes we need to look around us to see how fortunate we really are and to make sure we are prioritizing the most important things in our life: Family, health, faith, and friends. As I was reflecting on things, I remembered the demonstration by Steven Covey of the "Big Rocks". I wanted to share this powerful video with our Rosedale community. I hope you find it as beneficial as I have.

Alison Smith - Director of Finance

My name is Alison Smith and I am the Director of Finance for Livonia Public Schools.  As a Livonia Public Schools alumni and current Livonia resident, it’s my pleasure to serve the students, staff, Board of Education, and our community in this capacity. I’ve worked at Livonia Public Schools since 2012 and was just promoted to Director of Finance in September 2016.  I’m responsible for the implementation of policies providing for the accurate accounting, reporting, and control procedures for all District funds.  Some of our day-to-day business office operations include processing biweekly payroll, cutting weekly accounts payable checks, receiving and depositing payments, and preparing and monitoring the district’s operating budget.

2016 has been an exciting year for the Smith household.  My husband, Rod, and I just welcomed our first child, Brandon, into the world.  In addition to our baby boy, we have two furry family members: Cody, a golden retriever and Riley, a silky terrier.  We love going to walks and playing all sorts of games such as cards and board games.

My goal this year is to work closely with our building staff to learn how the business office can support the wonderful things happening with our students in our schools.

Five words that describe LPS: Positive, Community, Alive, Thoughtful, and Outstanding.

  • Students Fun Walk for Rosedale 2016 Results:   121 students contributed to our biggest PTA fundraiser for the year.  Our students raised $4,188.53 for their school.  All the funds will be used for programs and activities during this school year to benefit our Rosedale students!  Our top 8 fundraisers are Dylan W., Jacob S., Srihan D., Autym D., Eliza R., Layla A., Noah D., and Silas O.  Prizes were awarded to the children this past week during the Monday morning assembly.  The top 8 fundraisers won fantastic prizes.  All the contributors who brought in their donation by October 7 won a great raffle prize. Also, every Rosedale student in the school was given a special prize token and a Rosedale Fun Walk bookmark for participating in the event.
  • The top earning classroom in the school is Ms. Robertson's First Grade class and the second top earning classroom is Mrs. Casucci's Fourth Grade class.  These two classrooms won a pizza party lunch.  Thank you to all the Rosedale students, families, teachers, staff, and community donors who helped to make our fundraiser a wonderful event.  We appreciate your continued support for our school!!
  • We still are in need of volunteers for our Trunk or Treat event on Friday, October 28. Please use the following link to sign up for a slot! Trunk or Treat Volunteer Link

Did you know that all the money raised for our Fun Walk goes to support programs, materials, and opportunities for student learning? The PTA allows Rosedale students to go on field trips, bring in assemblies, and purchase materials like Scholastic Magazine for our students. Thanks to our top fund raisers and ALL students who participated in our Fun Walk. Great things are happening at Rosedale!

Diving into the Data

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! Three times a year, the entire Rosedale staff takes a day to "dive" into student data to see how they are performing and to be sure that struggling students get the intervention they need. It's very powerful to see teachers, paraprofessionals, support staff, and other experts all coming together to identify the needs of each child. I'm always amazed at how well our teachers know their students and how it's much more than just looking at data, but about looking at ways to help each and every child. I'm proud to work with such a dedicated group of educators. At Rosedale, we look beyond the data and look for ways to make each student successful!

We dive into the data several times a year!

  •  The results of the Fun Walk and the announcements of the top fund raisers and prizes will happen next week! Thanks to all who contributed.

Did you know that there will be a county wide millage proposal on the November 8 ballot? The millage proposal would result in an increase of $385 funding per pupil. A town hall informational meeting was held this week to inform voters. If you were not able to make that meeting, you can find out more information at Wayne County Education Enhancement Millage. We want our LPS families to be informed about this important issue. Great things are happening at Rosedale!

Walking for a Purpose

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! Each year, Rosedale students participate in a Fun Walk. The walk has taken on many different forms throughout the years from "walk around the world" to "Rock n Roll" walking, but the purpose has always remained the raise funds to help provide programs and opportunities for our students. The PTA does a wonderful job of getting out flyers, organizing the event, and providing goodies for the students, but it's the parents and community members that make the donations necessary to make it a successful event. Once again, our PTA has organized a successful event and once again our Rosedale community have been generous with their giving. I'm proud of our students, staff, and community for all their work and helping our kids walk for a purpose!

Jennifer Taiariol - Director of Student Services
My name is Jennifer Taiariol and I am the Director of Student Services for Livonia Public Schools.  I have been in the district for many years and have served as a school psychologist, program specialist, and coordinator.  My current responsibilities as Director include supervising programs and services for all children and young adults, birth to age 26 with disabilities.  Outside of LPS, I coach a special needs hockey team, the MORC Stars, and thoroughly enjoy my time working with some of our students on the ice.

My other role is that of wife to my husband, Dino and mom to my three sons Jake, Nick and Joey.  My boys are all graduates of South Lyon High School.  I have one in graduate school, one in community college and one who is currently working.  On weekends, I play hockey with a bunch of friends in a women’s recreational league in Brighton.

My goal this year is to make Student Services a Joyful place to work.  I read Joy, Inc. over the summer and have implemented some of the practices at Menlo Industries here in Student Services with the four Coordinators.  The purpose of our reorganization is to promote greater understanding of all needs of our students with disabilities across the district so we can better support our students, staff and families.

Five words that describe LPS: Family, Supportive, Integrity, First-Class, and Rewarding.

  • The Rosedale PTA Annual Fundraiser:  Students Fun Walk for Rosedale was a wonderful event.  Thank you very much to all our Rosedale students, families, teachers, staff, volunteers, and community donors!!  Your continued support matters to our school.
Did you know we just recognized our Students of the Month for the theme of "Safety"? One student from each classroom was selected to be honored and received a certificate and was recognized in front of the whole school. Their families were also invited to the event. We are proud of our winners! Great things are happening at Rosedale!

It's a Small World After All

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! Rosedale sure is a special place and one of the things that makes it so special is our diversity. Our school has students representing 13 countries and 17 languages. That's a diverse student population! Luckily, we have great support for our English Language Learners through highly qualified paraprofessionals and a staff that celebrates diversity. When students work and play closely with people from diverse backgrounds, they learn that we are more similar than different and the world is not such a big place after all!

It really is a small world!

Sheila Alles - Chief Academic Officer
I am very fortunate to a professional career that spans more than 40 years in public education.  My passion for teaching and learning has been and continues to be my driving force every day. I love my position as our district's Chief Academic Officer and I love working for Livonia Public Schools which I have done for the past twenty years.  Every day brings new challenges and projects in my job which includes curriculum, instruction, assessment, textbooks and classroom resources, school improvement, professional development, state reporting requirements, just to name a few.  In my spare time, I love to read, travel, watch movies, visit with friends, and most of all spending time with my husband.

My personal goal this year is to read at least one fiction book each month.  I know that doesn't sound like much, but I mostly read information books, articles, and online news reports for my job. My professional goal is provide guidance and support to our schools as we implement collaborative learning time this school year.

Livonia Public Schools is the best school district is Michigan and the whole USA so it's going to be very difficult for me to narrow my list to only 5 words, but here goes.  Amazing, empowering, exceptional, responsive and welcoming.

  • Fun Walk Volunteers Needed.  If you can volunteer during school on Friday, October 7 from 1:15 to 3:15 PM for our Fun Walk, we would love to have you!!  Please contact Carol Engle at for more information or to RSVP.  We need volunteers to walk with the classes, help with snack time, and also take pictures.

  • PTA Meeting will be held on Thursday, October 6 at 6:30PM in the school library.  All are welcome.  You do not need to be a member to attend.

Did you know that Rosedale has a "Student of the Month" Assembly each month to recognize students? This month we selected one student from each classroom for the theme of Safety and next month we will recognize students for Responsibility. I love making those positive phone calls to invite parents to celebrate their child. Great things are happening at Rosedale!
