It's a Small World After All

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! Rosedale sure is a special place and one of the things that makes it so special is our diversity. Our school has students representing 13 countries and 17 languages. That's a diverse student population! Luckily, we have great support for our English Language Learners through highly qualified paraprofessionals and a staff that celebrates diversity. When students work and play closely with people from diverse backgrounds, they learn that we are more similar than different and the world is not such a big place after all!

It really is a small world!

Sheila Alles - Chief Academic Officer
I am very fortunate to a professional career that spans more than 40 years in public education.  My passion for teaching and learning has been and continues to be my driving force every day. I love my position as our district's Chief Academic Officer and I love working for Livonia Public Schools which I have done for the past twenty years.  Every day brings new challenges and projects in my job which includes curriculum, instruction, assessment, textbooks and classroom resources, school improvement, professional development, state reporting requirements, just to name a few.  In my spare time, I love to read, travel, watch movies, visit with friends, and most of all spending time with my husband.

My personal goal this year is to read at least one fiction book each month.  I know that doesn't sound like much, but I mostly read information books, articles, and online news reports for my job. My professional goal is provide guidance and support to our schools as we implement collaborative learning time this school year.

Livonia Public Schools is the best school district is Michigan and the whole USA so it's going to be very difficult for me to narrow my list to only 5 words, but here goes.  Amazing, empowering, exceptional, responsive and welcoming.

  • Fun Walk Volunteers Needed.  If you can volunteer during school on Friday, October 7 from 1:15 to 3:15 PM for our Fun Walk, we would love to have you!!  Please contact Carol Engle at for more information or to RSVP.  We need volunteers to walk with the classes, help with snack time, and also take pictures.

  • PTA Meeting will be held on Thursday, October 6 at 6:30PM in the school library.  All are welcome.  You do not need to be a member to attend.

Did you know that Rosedale has a "Student of the Month" Assembly each month to recognize students? This month we selected one student from each classroom for the theme of Safety and next month we will recognize students for Responsibility. I love making those positive phone calls to invite parents to celebrate their child. Great things are happening at Rosedale!

Dream It and Do It

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! Our quote this week at Rosedale was "If you can dream it, you can do it." by Walt Disney. When we talked about it as a school in our assembly, we emphasized the "Do It" part of the quote. We all have dreams and we all have wishes, but they will remain dreams unless we take the initiative to reach them and put in the hard work to make them come true. This led to a talk about learning from failure, not giving up when things are tough, and following a plan to success. Ask your child what dreams they have and then follow up by asking them what steps they need to take to make them a reality!

Tuesday, September 27: 6:00-8:00 pm Rosedale Skate Night at Riverside Arena
Thursday, October 6: PTA Meeting at 6:30 pm

Phil Francis - Assistant Director of Human Resources

I've worked in LPS since 1999. I started as a special education teacher at Churchill High School, then became Asst. Principal at Frost, then Livonia Career Technical Center. In 2009 I became Federal Programs Coordinator and July 2015 became Assistant Director of Human Resources. I met my wife while working at Churchill when she was an English teacher. She's still at Churchill as the Media Specialist and Director of the Churchill Library Media Center.

One of my goals for this school year is to visit all of our buildings multiple times to speak with students and staff throughout the year.

Five words: My family away from home

  • Your Rosedale Elementary PTA is having its biggest fundraiser of the year.  The Student Fun Walk for Rosedale will take place during school hours on October 7, 2016.  We are asking the students to bring in money donations to be used for programs and activities for our school this year.  The kids can win great prizes!!  Thank you so much for supporting our school.

  • Get Rollin' at Rosedale Elementary's Family Skating Party!  This event will be held at Riverside Arena on Tuesday, September 27 from 6-8 PM.  Admission is $5.50 and includes regular skate rental.  All ages welcome!!  This is a fun family event and everyone is invited.  Please come and have some fun with other Rosedale families.

Did you know that Rosedale has a special "New Student Luncheon" each year for students grades one through four? The students get to come to the library for a meet and greet with other new students and have lunch with the principal and our elementary support teacher. Students make new friendships, become familiar with the school, and receive a Rosedale pencil and sticker. It's a fun way to get to know our newest students. Great things are happening at Rosedale!

Let's Celebrate!

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! If you've been at Rosedale for a while, you know that we like to Celebrate Mondays. Every week, we start our day with a short all school assembly to celebrate being back in school, having a chance to start fresh, and share an inspirational message or song. With our new audio-visual system in our gym, Mondays are better than ever! You may also have noticed that we had "Monday Motivation" posts on Facebook throughout the summer. The more we can model for our students that school is a fun and exciting place to be, the more likely they are to succeed and thrive! So when your child comes home each Monday from school, ask them "What did you celebrate today?"

Singing our Rosedale Risso song!

Thursday, October 6: PTA meeting at 6:30 pm
Friday, October 7: Rosedale Fun Walk 1:30-3:00 pm

Wednesday, October 12: Picture Day!

Cynthia Scott - Director of Elementary Education

Children have always been at the heart of everything I do beginning with helping my younger siblings on the farm in Missouri.  Three daughters and eight grandchildren later, children continue to be the center of my personal life and my professional life.

We moved to Michigan in 1992 where I continued my role as a classroom teacher in Livonia at Garfield and Webster.  Since then I have had the privilege of serving as a principal and currently as the Director of Elementary and District Services for Livonia Public Schools.

I am truly honored to have the privilege of working with the students, parents and staff in Livonia Public Schools.  In my daily work I strive to remember one simple truth…Students do not care how much you know until they know how much you care.  I believe that is true for all of us.

My Five Words for Livonia Public Schools: Caring, Collaborative, Committed, Engaged, Motivating.

  • Volunteering is one of the best ways a parent or family member can help support the students, faculty and staff at Rosedale. Rosedale PTA has many opportunities for volunteering. Without the help, talents and willingness of our volunteers many of the activities, programs and events at Rosedale would not happen. Please be on the lookout for the volunteer sign-up form being sent home with your child soon.
  • Food donations are  the main ingredient needed for a successful bake sale! We would like to thank everyone for supporting the Rosedale PTA by donating baked goods for our bake sale at the Open House/Curriculum Night. We appreciate everyone's generosity and help!
  • The Students Fun Walk for Rosedale will be held on October 7, 2016 from 1:30-3:00 PM during school.  We are asking Rosedale families to send in monetary donations by October 7, 2016 to support our school.  This is the only time the PTA will ask for monetary donations to support our school.  Your very generous donations will help fund field trips, assemblies, reading programs, teacher appreciation, family fun activities and much more!  All children who bring in any donations will be entered into a prize raffle and the top fundraisers will be eligible for great prizes.  The top earning classrooms will be rewarded, too.  More information on the prizes will be coming soon!!

Did you know that Rosedale has moved afternoon recess to later in the day? In an effort to give a larger block of uninterrupted instructional time each afternoon, we have moved recess back 45 minutes. This allows us to have classes like art, music and physical education in the afternoon without losing instructional time to go back to class to get ready for dismissal. It also allows for longer periods for reading and math before recess time. The students and staff really like the new schedule. Great things are happening at Rosedale!

What is Your Hope?

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! Each year as students begin school, we have hopes for their success as teachers and parents. However, we also need to remember that students have their own hopes for each year. As we prepared for our new year with students, the Rosedale staff watched a video that shows the power of matching hopes and dreams of both students and staff. Some classrooms have even incorporated this into their room. I'd like to share this video with you and invite you to ask your child what their hopes are for this new school year!

What is Your Hope? (3 minutes)

Mrs. Andrea Oquist - Superintendent

Greetings!  Thanks so much for the invitation to share my greetings for the new school year with our Rosedale students, families and staff. Rosedale holds a special place in my heart, as I began my career as a principal there when it was Johnson Elementary, and it always feels like home when I come to visit.  Such a special group of folks!

It is with such great pride that I serve as the superintendent for our outstanding school district. It is the people who make our district who we are, and what we are.  I have had the privilege of working in Livonia Public Schools for over 26 years, and am also a proud LPS alumni and parent of two LPS graduates.  My husband Jeff and I love living in this community, and raising our family in such a special place.  Our favorite time is spent with our two amazing children, our parents and our dear friends.  We love to cook, cheer on our favorite sports teams, explore "up north" in Michigan and take walks with our fun loving Yorkie Bichon, CoCo.  We celebrate many Italian traditions, and love to host our whole extended family for special occasions and holidays!

This coming year, my goal for the students entrusted to us is that they learn and grow in joyful environments where they know they are valued, feel capable and confident to tackle challenges before them, and are able to celebrate their successes with those around them each and every day.

Five words you would use to describe LPS: Engaging, Proud, Innovative, Hopeful & Child-centered

  • We had a great turn out for our first PTA meeting of the year!
  • We will be having a bake sale during Open House/Curriculum Night. Donations the day of (Thursday, September 15) are welcome!
  • Interested in the joining the Rosedale PTA? Please see the attached membership form and return to the main office.

Did you know that Rosedale has a second computer lab opening this month? The second lab will allow for greater access to computers for classroom projects and research. It will also allow us to continue with computer instruction even during testing times (like iReady and M-Step) as we will now have a second lab to utilize. Great things are happening at Rosedale!

A Year of Innovation

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! Each year before the students return, our staff members have professional development designed to help us grow as educators. This year, we all read the book "The Innovator's Mindset" which discussed ways that we can make our classrooms dynamic and student-centered learning environments. I'm excited to start a new school year and see what innovative and exciting lessons our teachers develop! Learning should be fun and at Rosedale we strive to make our classrooms places where curiosity is encouraged and developed. It's going to be a great year at Rosedale!

Rosedale staff members are ready to innovate!!

Tuesday, September 6: First Day of School for Students! (12:10 dismissal)
Wednesday, September 7: First full day for students (3:59 dismissal & lunch served)
Thursday, September 8: PTA Meeting 6:30 pm (all parents welcome & childcare provided)

Thursday, September 15: Open House from 6:00-6:30 pm / Curriculum Night 6:30-7:00 pm

For the past two years, Rosedale has been recognizing our staff members with the "Meet the Staff" segment. While we will continue this tradition for our new staff members, we are also going to expand this segment to include leaders through the Livonia Public Schools system. Next week, we will kick off this segment with a special feature of our superintendent, Mrs. Andrea Oquist. I hope you will enjoy hearing from our LPS leadership team!

  • Our first PTA meeting will be held this Thursday, September 8 at 6:30 pm in the Library
  • Meetings are open to all Rosedale parents and community members!
  • Pizza and childcare are provided for all meetings.

Did you know that Rosedale starts off every Monday morning with a "Celebrate Monday" assembly? It's a chance to get together as a whole school and start our week off on a positive note. We talk about themes like respect, gratitude, and teamwork and often watch a short inspirational video. It's a fun way to build community and develop those important character skills that help with academics and social skills. Great things are happening at Rosedale!
