Learning and Growing

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! This sure was a hard post to write after sending out the notice last week. For those of you who may not have heard, I will be assuming the position of principal at Buchanan Elementary here in Livonia Public Schools for the 2017-2018 school year. I will certainly miss the staff, students and parents from Rosedale and you have my promise that my heart and head will be here with our community through the end of the school year. Although change is hard (especially when you have grown to love a community like I have with Rosedale), change is necessary for learning and growing. I've worked in several different classrooms and several different schools in the past 22 years and I have learned from each experience and grown from each change. So, although I will miss this community, I'm embracing change with a spirit of adventure and new learning. It's what I ask of our students each and every day, so how could I do any less than that? Thank you for helping me learn and grow Rosedale community!

Shadow a Student Challenge

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! You may remember that last year, I participated in the "Shadow a Student" challenge with a third grade student. This year, I joined a second grade classroom and followed a student named Jack. Jack is new to our school this year and it was a great chance to get to know him and also to see what it's like to be a student again. I got to do math problems, I participated in art class, and I got to play at recess with the kids. It was great to see how nice the students are to one another (and me) and it was exciting to participate in their activities. A question that is often asked of educators is "Would you want to be a student in your own school?".  Well, I can tell you after a second time of shadowing a student, my answer is a profound "YES!".

It was fun to be back in second grade!!

Margaret Streffon - Transportation Supervisor

My official title is Transportation supervisor. I grew up in Livonia, and am a graduate of LPS. My husband and I still live in the district, and my daughter is an LPS graduate as well.  I have worked in the district for 34 years, starting as a bus driver in 1982, then moving into the office as a dispatcher in 2006, then to an assistant supervisor in 2008. I have been the supervisor since the fall of 2014.

A goal I have for this year is to hire and train enough staff to fully support the district with the upcoming school closures.

Five words I would use to describe the district are empowering, supportive, exciting, inspiring, and committed.

Did you know that two members of our Rosedale community were honored at this year's PTA Founder's Day Banquet? Mr. Joe Libtow and Mrs. Maria Ackerman were both given "Shining Star" awards for their dedication and commitment to Rosedale. It's the dedication of our staff and our volunteers that makes our school and our district such a great place to be. Great things are happening at Rosedale!

Mileage Club

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! In our efforts to help keep our Rosedale students active and healthy, we have started an optional activity each week for our kids to participate in.  Each Tuesday (3rd & 4th) and Thursday (K-2), students may go to the field where cones will placed allowing students to record the number of laps they run or walk. Students may save up markers with the goal of getting to 13.1 miles (half marathon) by the end of the year. This program, The Mileage Club, is being headed up by Ms. Larabell and it promises to be a fun activity for Rosedale students!

Old Man Winter

Hi folks, Jon Wennstrom here! If you haven't noticed yet, Old Man Winter is still here and he's making his presence known! The cold temperatures are back and so is the snow! Even with the colder temperatures, it's healthy for the students to get outside and long as they are properly dressed. Please remember that we go outside if the wind chill is above 15 degrees and it's not raining. Students still need boots, hats, gloves, and warm coats for the days we go outside. As always, if you need any assistance for gear, please contact me at the main office. With the proper gear, outside recess can be healthy and fun!

John Raymond - Administrator of Public Safety

This is my 5th year with Livonia Public Schools.  It’s an honor for me to work with a group of such dedicated professionals!

As the Administrator of Public Safety, I work closely with the Livonia Police Department and our security contractor, Blue Line to optimize the safety and security of the LPS community.  I am also responsible for developing and delivering emergency response training to the LPS staff.

Before I came to Livonia Public Schools, I was a police officer with the Livonia Police Department.  During my 25 years with Livonia PD I served in many different roles.  I was a Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, Detective,  and Sergeant.   When I retired, I was a detective handling child and family abuse investigations. I grew up in Livonia, attended Livonia schools and married a Livonia girl.  My wife Wendy and I (the Livonia girl) recently celebrated our 25th anniversary by running a half marathon at Disney World. Our daughter recently graduated from Livonia Public Schools and is attending college in Florida.

My primary goal for this is year to complete the updates of the emergency response and recovery plans for the Livonia Public Schools.

My five words to describe LPS:  Dedicated, Determined, Compassionate, Caring and Professional.

A fun video to help build "Confidence" in students!

Did you know all of our teachers post their learning targets for their lessons in their classrooms? If you look, you will find "I can" statements or "The leaner will" signs that show students what concepts they will learn in each of the academic areas each week. This helps teachers make sure that the lesson targets are aligned with the curriculum and also helps students understand what they should be learning and why. Great things are happening at Rosedale!
